Pioneer AVH-P4100 Install with options and opinions.

This thread is being started as I have hijacked another and feel terrible about it. I have a 02 4Runner and needed a more feasible iPod and video solution. If you have questions on the head unit itself post em up or look it up. I used the video bypass found here to be able to use the video features while in motion. RockSlide and I are installing cameras and following Snake eaters lead using a multi position knob and daisy chaining the camera off the power but keeping the video feeds seperate.

I will be finalizing the baby cam setup so it's a bit cleaner. The bak up cam is done but it's power source will change. Current power supply comes from the passenger side backup lamp. I quick connected using blue scotchloks + for + and - for -. The camera becomes available when the backup lights come on. I then read that you can access the rear view camera mode when in other source modes. THis was orginally an issues as I figured out how to get the AV mode to become the background screen when using everything but iPod, now if I switch to a rotary selector like snake eaters I will be able to view cameras while using the iPod.

Favoring simplicity I to used a 6 position 2 pole rotary switch. There are many ways to hook this up by like I said I like simplicity. For power consumption or the possibility of trouble down the road I decided to use the 6P switch as a power manager instead of a video manager. I will daisy chain the video line using Y connectors and since each will be separately powered the head unit will only pick up the currently powered camera. I'm currently only running 2 cameras a backup and a baby cam. My wires were already run to the rear (3 wire) for an internal strobe system I had setup for construction work. I used two of the 3 for + and - for the baby cam and opted not to - it locally because it will be moving from one side to the other. The backup cam was originally + and - to the backup bulb, but since the purchase of the switch I will use the remaining 3rd wire for power and - locally.

The switch only requires the + to the cameras and 1 or 2 poles in the center be hot, for two cameras you should have 3 wires 1 for each camera and a hot from fuse box or battery. You can - the other pole if you want but it is all in preference.

There seems to be a warm up period of the iris or whatever on my rear view camera, but other than that everything works like a charm.

Not sure if my camera needs a hat but the rear view unit has an almost warmup style start up. During the day it's white then clear picture within a few seconds.

BTW, if you get a sec, snap a pic of the HU with the rear camera activated. Curious to see what the vie from the camera looks like on the big screen.

Take pictures while driving are you crazy? Yea I'll get some, umm another issues is rain or mist or precip of generally any form that gets on the lens whether rain-x or not can cause spotting in the reverse image

BTW, I finally finished all my wiring today! What a chore!

Tomorrow, I will hook up the main supply to the battery, temporarily install the HU, plug the cameras in and see if they fire up...keep your fingers crossed that they do!!

Good news, the cameras worked upon initial hook up! Of course, when I mounted the HU, the cameras quit working...turned out a ground wire kept shorting everytime the wiring harness moved out b/c of a faulty cheap tap connector (BTW, I hate those things). So I removed the tap connector and just soldered the tap wire instead. They work great now with the HU installed.

Only thing left to do is mount the back up cam in the bumper and I'm finished. I'll post photos once all is said and done.

Rock, depending how you plan on mounting the rear cam some words of caution or a better how to than I had. If you plan on running it in the same spot on the bumper as I, this is what I recommend.

The standard 1 1/4" for the camera (double check). on the bumper skin side.

On the interior side, remove the spare and use a large 2" or so hole saw to drill out the sub frame. That way you will have more than enough room to adjust the angle of your camera.

Oh it's jut sheet metal "it will buff out". The new idea I had will have you making a bigger hole on the backside through the sub-frame or bracing and then a smaller correct size hole on the finished side. Both of which I recommend a hole saw for ease and $$.
