Pinion install help.

so here we are installing an aussie locker on my friends 4-runner. we got the aussie locker installed but the pinion (wich was f-ed up in the first place) is not being nice to us. We installed it with a solid spacer, and at first used all the shims that came with the aussie locker. when we did so there was play between the pinion and the housing in that if we were to put the housing in the vice we could move the pinion up and down about 3/16". We then took all the spacers out and it helped a little bit but it still has a wigle room of about 1/8". we had the big impact wrench on the pinion nut and im pretty sure that ist all the way down... is the spacer we orderd too long? are the berrings f-ed? upon visual inspection the berrings looked and felt fine, but i guess we could have overlooked something. If we had a lathe ide just shave down the spacer and not tell my friend about it, (sometimes im a dick) but at this point I dont know what to do. anyone have similar trouble with this? any insights? should I call marlin crawler and complain about the spacer size? I cant imagine that they have the demetions wrong, all i could think is that I somehow got a bad one... but that seems unlikely.

anyway any help will be apreciated we are trying to get this in by the weekend.

What type of diff do yo have? 4 cyl or V6?

What spacer did you order? They are different.

The V6 spacer is actually shorter than the 4 cyl one.

V6: 1.82" tall
4 cyl: 2.37" tall

Take the carrier out of the housing, work with just the pinion.
 
Sry the carrier is out of the housing its just the pinion and housing we are f-ing with. the thing is the amount of play we have is like 1/8 of an inch so even if we have the wrong spacer wouldnt that make it more like 3/8 or 7/16" off? anyway we have the 4 cyl 3rd member and I do believe that that is what we orderd, Ill have nat look at the order tomorrow and get the part number of the spacer just to make sure.

Are you sure the gears are for a 4 cyl diff?

Will the slop go away if you put it together with no spacer?

If you're re-using the original gears, do you still have the old crush sleeve that came out, maybe you could mic the length of it, compare it to the spacer. Or at least just set them side-by-side, see which is longer.
 
well the reason we opened the thing up in the first place is that someone had way overtightened the thing and the pinion was not sitting right in the housing so i believe that the old crush sleeve is not something we can use to accuratly compare. The third member is a toyota 4-runner auto with the 4:33 gears. and Im fairly sure it came with the same 22re engine thats in the truck now. nothing is 100% because the PO was a moron and I havnt found one thing that he did that we dont have to re do, so maybe he salvaged the parts but I dont think so. I am out to buy steel now but when I make it back to nat's place ill yank the spacer and see if I can get the thing tight without it. (im pretty sure ill be able to) Thanks.
 
It sounds to me like you have mis-matched parts. I'm gonna guess that you have a V6 housing, but 4 cyl gears. Maybe this pic that I found will help you identify what you have:

You CAN install 4 cyl gears in a V6 housing, but you have to put a thick shim under the pinion. Read thru this website for more info:

Ok so in comparison with your photos we do hace a 4 cyl housing, and just llike I suspected when I took out the spacer it snuged right up with no play whatsoever. what in the heack does this mean? Do I have a bad set of gears? its suspose to be the 4:33's out of an auto tranny.
 
Ok so after pulling my hair out for a week on this matter I have decided that the berring must be the wrong one for the aplication, and I will be headed to the dealership to get the right one, shot in the dark, but noone would happen to have the part number for this berring and race would they? if not im sure i can find in on the computer screen at the parts counter with some parts guy who knows little about these old trucks. Thanks that link will save my ars about 20 minuets tomorrow morning at the dealership when they ask for the vin # and I have to explain that its going into a bastardized buggie with no vin #'s to speak of.
 
Sounds like the spacer is the culprit. If you look at site that 2ndGen posted up, it shows that there is a bearing difference between the 85 and older and the 86 and newer.
I've set up a few thirds with customer supplied parts...... early gears don't like 86 and up bearing kits. The reverse of your problem occurs.
Just gotta match the bearings, to the gears, the the solid spacer.

Ok so here it is. We got the job done (better late than never right) Turns out that the inner pinion bearing was the culprit being too large. It took two trips to Toyota by “N8” to get the right bearing from them. Then it was just a simple tear down and install with our new press (as seen below)

Turns out that we had a bearing that was post 85 and we needed one for a pre 85 truck. We ended up with a Koyo 3207JR cone/32307J that fit perfect. While we were at it we checked back lash and carrier bearing pre load and got it to fit snug and perfect. (check out the bar stool 3rd member holder) Worked alright, was just a pain to sneak the torque wrench in there! Thanks to everyone for helping us out with this. Installing the aussie locker turned out to be easy it was just that one wrong part in the 3rd itself that f-ed us. Next time it’ll go smooth.
