adjusted the carb i thought to spec now i have a little pinging - could this cause this or just the timing -- i had the bb at the bottom of the window and before i messed with the carb again i didnt have pinging --

pinging occurs when the fuel in the combustion chamber ignites too early or too quickly and the main force of the combustion occurs while the piston is still coming up on the compression stroke. This can be caused by: fuel octane too is low, distributor timing too is advanced, engine is running too hot, carbon build up causing auto-ignition, etc.

If you leaned out the fuel mixture then this could cause the engine to run hotter which could lead to pinging. But you don't say what you did when you messed with the carb. If you adjusted idle speed, this would not effect pinging. If you adjusted idle mixture, this might effect pinging, but I don't know how much contribution the idle circuit has under load conditions (when pinging occurs). If you changed jets or tweaked the various linkages or disconnected the secondary advance or left a vacuum hose off, these would be more likely suspects, I think.

its a desmog jimc carb rebuild/dizzy rebuild ect. - ive been following the manual for mixture and idle and thought i had it correct - its like its back and forth - also using rpm, and vacuum guage to do it -- i richened it up and i think it stopped pinging - still having the popcorn popping from the tail pipe some - not backfiring - felt better leaner i think -- i really wish i had a landcruiser mech. in the area to just go behind me so i would feel better about this but at least i will understand this truck when done

also have not cat. and new muffler - but have a small hole where i removed the pipe for the desmog where my welding wasnt good

you know i did reversed the charcoal canister lines yesterday and noticed a rpm increase and vacuum increase up to 21 now - i was trying to prevent the gas tank split -- mine is a new one - i wonder if this could have changed something

Why on earth did you "adjust" a JimC carb rebuild???
It should of been bolt up a go as long as you got the timing right.

i know -- i know -- i tried asking with no response because when i had it all together it was 300 rpm at idle -- i didnt know what to do -- when i got a response from him i dont think he knew that it was one of his -- i have it listed with the problems i was having and pics and video before i messed with it --

i found this -- Note: The tendency to pinging is highest when the engine runs on the ideal air fuel mixture. (14:1) Therefore a mixture problem -running too lean or too rich- will not cause engine to ping.

do you think its my gas it did sit for a year but i added new 87 to it - or my timing too advanced at the bb being now set at the bottom -- i had the vacuum at 21 roughly and now set with carb i think to spec at 650 rpms vacuum now at roughly 20 or just below steady

also why is the carb sticking at a higher rpm 1000 when stopped until i press the gass at a stop sign -- then returns to normal around 650rpm

im going to get higher octane fuel and will report back -- the pinging only starts at about 3500 rpms in 3rd 4th gear -- or any other thoughts i will check back

back after 89 octane - pinging is gone --

i adjusted the carb a little richer also -- i notice now 3rd is more of a gradual rise in rpm speed/strong sounding but i dont get a umpth of power band feel (maybe this umpth of power is not normal for a fj60 and i know have it better) not sure --

again never driven another fj60 before kinda now reminds me of my old jeep wrangler power -- any ideas and help really appreciated

here ticking anyone

i was thinking i may have it to rich now - driving to work i dont think i have the same power i did before adjusting to make it richer -- also since the needle moves at aroung 21 more steady at 20 --

Just a word of advice. Always set the timing first, then adjust the carb mixture. You can monkey with a carb all day, then change the timing 1 degree and you have to start over. I think you'd want it idling closer to 650.

i think so too -- if this sound right - im going to lean it some which should take the rpms down (also still have popcorn popping on decel)
