the red one of above is SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how did they get can back to make them a top or is it just a stock small truck short bed canback????

seriosly interested!

I posted the red one. This trialer is not mine but I have corresponded with the owner. Before Can-Back was sold they did custom projects which the new owners are not entertaining as I have spoken to them.

The can-back on this trailer is basically a modified top from a step side compact pickup. I am going to sew my own top after I get my trailer cage built by 2badfj's. I will post up the results in a few months when it is done.

The other option for a top is the softtopper. It is held together by a bimini type expanding frame. I have inquired about buying a top without poles for a step side truck but have not heard back.

Here are a couple pix of my setup.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think Koffer still has some tents. The downside is that he's in New Jersey...but even with shipping...if you move a few of them in bulk, might be better than the $1500 price.

this is turning into a really cool thread... now more pics!

Hinged steel lid, custom tailgate. It's not bad, although I wouldn't mind if the tent sat a little taller:

Can you too tell me more about the tops you have for your trailers? Since the tents mount on the tops I hope this wonn't be a hijack??
How do your tops mount to the trailer, how are they reinforced to support the weight of tent and people, how heavy are the tops by them selves?
Can the tops be locked, how did you mount the tents to the top, what are the tops made of? steel/aluminum/plastic
Did you fab up a gutter on the side of the top to mount Yakima style bars?

will you tell me what I need to do to mount jerry cans horizontily to my trailer like you have in your picture?
Thanks

Mine's 16-gauge (or is it 18 gauge? it's been a while) sheetmetal, stamped with a cross-X for rigidity, with two 1" ribs running from front to back about 14" apart. It's mounted to a section of rectangular tubing welded to the front of the tub. It's heavy, hence the gas shocks to assist.

Mine locks at the back and secures the tub, you can't drop the tailgate with the lid locked.

I bought those mounts from a now-defunct shop, but they should be real easy to fabricate.
Thanks
steven

See responses above

You can see the inside of the lid here, and also a detail of how it closes. What you can't see on here are the lockout tabs.

Look at the picture above of the top/lid. It weighs 85 lbs. The frame is made from 1"x1" square tubing welded together ($120). The 6' sides and the 4' ends come stock in that length at Home Depot. The three cross ribs are 1"x1"x46"(I just cut 2" from 4' ones). The top is 16 gage cold rolled steel cut to 48"x72"from 4'x8' sheet at the dealer ($85). We laid frame out on trailer and welded it together then welded the top down in about 16 places underneath. I caulked the edges and painted it, attached it with four 2"x2"hinges using crimped lock nuts ($12). Ran good 3/16"x1" rubber gasket around the top to seal out dust & water. The lid is supported by two 125lb gas struts($36) Total for lid, less than $300. It locks shut with two coupler latch locks.
The tent (125lbs) comes with tracks on the bottom with four bolts that adjust along the track. I just dropped them through the top at the 2nd & 4th ribs and put on lock nuts. Piece of cake.

Where abouts did you find the tailgate latches? Thats exactly what I am after

I'm diggin this thread, I just got a super clean M101 and was looking for ideas. Present plans are for tent on top, folding porta-bote under tent, 27lb folding evinrude outboard off a rear hitch mount when we're bringing the boat, water tank under, propane up front next to a small generator, gerrycans on the side like Exiled's setup, ARB fridge. Getting lots of good ideas on this thread!

I could be wrong but I think they are FJ40 windshield latches milled flush to work with the tailgate.

However, here are some great sites for hardware like that:

I love that trailer, it is really well done.

I'd like to revive this thread, as this is where it all started for several of us on the Trailer Tech forum. Any new ideas for your tent setups? I am working to get mine completed in the next 7-10 days. Here is the rough draft of where I am so far...

I have finished with the hinges and the deck, and I need to finish sealing and painting the deck prior to installing the lock hardware and tent (although I temporarily put it on for the attached pics). I am really looking forward to my first outing with this thing.

Looks clean and neat! Are you going to seal your plywood's edge so it won't get swollen from aborsb water?

Cheers,

Yes, I actually got this done earlier this evening. I did an extensive search for paintable sealants, and I settled for a masonry sealant, oddly enough. It was the only sealant that I could find that could be painted over (according to manufacturer specs). The deck and fence sealants all seemed too oily, and I figured that it might affect the OD paint process. It is drying overnight tonight, and I hope to do some painting tomorrow if the weather permits.

I also bought EPDM weatherstripping that I will use between the deck and the trailer to keep dust and water out.

My tent mounts to a Thule roof rack, the tent has a built in track for attaching to the roof rack and the spacing between srtingers is 36 inches.. Nice trailer there have fun Jim
