Very near a decision on replacement tires for the PO's LTXs - does anyone have a picture to post of 265/75-16s on the stock 8 inch wheels - as a quick ref? I've seen a lot of 285 praises, but this is a strong DD vehicle and most near term off road will be forest service stuff that is at least an 8 hr drive away. 265/75 BFG ATKOs seem right for now.

I had a hard time finding any pictures before I bought my terra grapplers. Some days I regret not getting the 285's, but I was in a pinch and the local store had these in stock.

From the side, there's virtually no difference as the circumference of a 265/75 is virtually the same as the stock tire size. Just a half inch narrower or so on the tread.

So, what's the blur under the cargo windows??

Hope that bird didn't leave any white blurs on your cruiser :)

Heres a shot of my 265/75 Kelly AWR's... which I'll be getting rid of when I can save some $$

Is that a bird flying through the picture?

gbell210 - Is that a comment on the Kelly specific tire or the size? If the size - why so and what are your primary offroad conditions that drive that thought? Thanks for the posting - nice rig and countryside.

Thanks that was Mount Rainer this past weekend,

The comment is on my set of Kelly's. One of them has a defect (And that model is hard to find now from what I'm told) , and can't be balanced. And I want to get a new set, probably the Revos, but not sure if I'll keep the 265 or go up to the 285 yet. From what others have posted as their gas mileage with 285's and what I'm getting (15.5mpg is the highest I've ever seen on pure highway) I'm leaning towards the 285's espically since its not my daily driver anymore and I plan on getting a lift in a year or so.

As far as my offroad conditions, I don't plan on rock crawling or mud bogging, so mainly expedition style and Forest service dirt roads. Nothing too serious, yet :)

I honestly can't say if Kelly's are good tires or not, since I have one bad one and I think it causes some vibration over 55. But I've always stuck with Michelins on my previous 4runner. I would still consider Michelins, but I want something a little more aggressive and after reading reviews on this board I'm leaning towards the 285 Revos.

In your case though since its a designated driver, I'd probably say stick with the 265's since they should be cheaper and easier to get, if you don't plan on lifting the rig anytime soon. BTW where are you located? Others may have better opinions depending on weather conditions too (snow vs. rain).

So that's what mine is going to look like with the 265 grapplers ha? I'm planning to get a set sometime at the end of the summer hopefully.

I have the same size grapplers on my 4runner now and I love them. Can't wait to get them on the 80.

I'm in MS, but expect that most off road will be in eastern TN & western NC - like you said forest service stuff mostly. We're thinking of a return run to Creede CO next summer, in the 80 this time. No plans for a lift before tires, shocks - and then a 2.5 will be the max considered.

I'd really like to try 285/70-17 - same width as stock, taller - but not enough to buy new rims at the moment.

Stock is 275mm wide, so 285 is wider. 285/75/16 at 32.8" tall, is only 0.1 inch taller than 285/70/17 and then you don't need new rims.

FWIW, I think 285/75/16 look so much better than 275/70/16 (31.2" tall)or 265/75/16 (31.6" tall), and the mpg difference was not noticeable to me on my last 80 series when I made the switch.

here is my truck with stock lift and 265 BFG ATs, after an OME medium lift with the same tires, and after an OME J lift with 285 bfg ats. hope it helps.

fwiw I noticed no real difference in handling when i switched from 265s to 285s with the medium lift (sorry no photo in that guise) but I definitely noticed and appreciated the increased clearance off road.
