I agree with what you're saying, Doc. He's just between the averages of the Mals and Huskies. Not too big/too small, like I said.

His eyes, as you can pretty well see from my Avatar, are blue. But they are an extremely pale blue: the pigmentation is primarily around the pupil and the rest of the iris is for all intents and purposes white.

Although I think it disqualifies from breed standard, I bet there are blue-eyed malamutes around. Rare, and if you define a mal as not-blue-eyed, well, there won't be any. But that is the nature of breed-standards versus real-world animals.

Blue-eyed wolves are unusual, too, but they occur. 3% of wolves (although all pups are blue-eyed at first) have blue eyes according to something I once read--but I con't know the accuracy of that for a fact. I do have a collection of photos of blue-eyed wolves cluttering up a corner of a couple of my hard drives. Genetically, blue eyes are recessive traits, in wolves and dogs as well as humans. Since some wolf populations tend to be pretty isolated, it only makes sense that there would be a few with blue peepers.

That being said, your guess of a Long-haired mal/wolf cross is kindof what I've settled on in my mind as well, despite the blue eyes. He might be all domestic mutt, too. He sure has a lot of wolf-like behaviours, so I like to imagine he's more wolf than not. But we'll never know what his parents were, unless maybe he learns to speak English. :D And anyway, such classifications outside breed standards in the canine world are totally artificial human constructs. He is what he is!

Dave, your last sentence "He is what he is" says it all.
I am glad he showed up your doorstep.
Take good care of him and enjoy his friendship.
Great dog.

Nice Rhodesian Ridgeback. My dod is on the way, American Bulldog.
Sorry no pics yet.

damn i gotta get a digi camera...

mine is a black lab husky cross, his mum was awesome, but he isn't bad himself. people think he looks like a german shepard (my all time favorite breed). he's only about 6 months, and still growin (can look me in the eyes on 2 legs though). he's a big softy though... don't think he's an alpha male, no humping, always looking to please, always wanting to follow the "pack", my bro and i. he can play rough, which is expected, cause my bro and i aren't lightweights, but a simple no makes him wimper (we don't hit him for anything). He learns to mimic behaviour, my cat always swipes at him, so now his favorite game is to walk up behind people and slap them. he eats tennis balls whole. so we gave him a basket ball... he poped it in 10 minutes. he's smart too, he didn't like the tap dripping on him when he had a drink, so he dragged the bucked out from under the tap.

i don't know if i should be concerned though... he drinks by submerging 99% of his head under water... sometimes he comes up half drowning.

in the 45, he always leans out the back window, just behind the passanger... leaving tounge prints on the window, looks like the "special" bus now.

in the 40, he rests his head on the center console, and lies down in the back... as long as he's close to the people he's happy. he's the best personality dog i've ever met

and my proudest moment, he's a hardcore surfer. we took him to the beach the other day, we weren't even out of the car, and he was already swimming in the rockpools, he'd play some ball, then run off, jump in the water, swim back to shore, and keep playing. but best of all, he bodysurfs.

he runs into the shorebreak, just before the wave breaks just out from shore, he turns and runs with it, the wave picks him up, he dissapears for a second, then he washes up the beach. jumps up wagging his tail, and bolts back into the water, and does it again. bit :bounce:

pics to follow.

<god i sound like a deranged parent

Some spectacular dogs on here so far !

Meghan was feeling a little left out though ... ;)

does that cat stand on the toys and pretend to be godzilla (my big cat does that). my little cat loses balance when she sleeps, generally on the window sil above the sink, and falls into the water

Ewah.. also known as Eddie, Mammu, Mamahoo, BAD!.. BAD BOY!,

This is my dog. Ex-girlfriend gave as a birthday present. Lost the girlfriend and kept the dog. He's not been wheeling yet but I plan to take him one day.

Here he is mountain climbing in June this year. 90 lbs now! The Peruvian illegal alien sheepherders point at him and ask "lobo?"
