Ok, since we're splitting out the doggies and the cruisers.....

Here's the cruiser on the christmas tree fetching trip: Look Dan, No Chains! (and no get stuck).

The puppy went along. He found a dead elk and a dead raven on that trip. The pictures are from last spring, howe'er.

Someone on Ebay, John. About 9 months ago iirc. Think he was in NV or CO, but I don't remember for sure. Think I paid $149.

IDave: You have one of the most stunning dogs that I have ever seen. Exactly what breed is he...because my first guess would either be Husky or Malamute, but I've never seen another one like yours. Maybe a wolf hybrid?

Stone,

He's 100% stray. 75lbs, 28inches tall at the withers, and 52 inches long. Showed up in the neighbor's yard one day. Howls with the family, but not spontaniously. Barks at other dogs.

We guess he's wolf hybrid, but how much or little is a guess. His feet are on the small end of the range for a wild wolf, and he curls his tail more than the wolves I've seen in videos. Other than that, he could be a lot wolf.

He's too big for a husky, small for a malamute, and his fur is entirely different from typical members of those breeds. He seems quite smart compared to other dogs we've had or known: figured out how to pull open doors, turn door latches, to get in and out when he wants to. But he hasn't learned to close the door behind himself yet.

I usually tell people he's a cross between miniature dachshund and mexican hairless!

Dave,

He looks "wolf-ish" to me. I still say he could have taken that mule deer from you if he wanted!

Are those cooper STT tires on your rig?

Had a college friend that had a wolf/husky mix. Really, really awesome dog. Very obedient and smart as a wip. Amazing story about that dog is that they went to alabama for a trip and took the dog with them. He got out to run and wee while they were camping one night and took off after a deer or something. Never came back. They looked for ever for the dog before they finally had to come home. One month later, NO s***, the dog was sitting on their front porch when they came home from class. It had a broken leg and was real skinny and sick, but found it's way back home in western NOrth Carolina. Amazing.

Those are Goodyear MT/Rs!

I think you're right about the muley. We had a fight over the head, sortof, recently. I took it away when he had it, mainly to reenforce dominence. He was not a happy camper and growled at me (a rare event). I'm sure that had he chosen, he could have had his way. (I gave it back later when he asked nicely. And all is in order, now.)

Here's Mo, the Miracle Mutt. He is a cancer survivor. 2+ years ago, he was given 2 months to live.
He is in his 2nd remission now, and is totally cancer free!!!

Here he is seen wondering why in the hell I parked on his pee rock.

Damn Scott, he looks like your avatar in the first pic.

Dave- There isn't much of a size distinction between a Malmute and a Husky. GENERALLY a Mal is bigger (65-90 lbs) than a husky (45-70?) but there is overlap. I've seen Malamute's that were 50 lbs when full grown. Some are just small. Also, there is a 'long hair' version of the malamute coat- which is what I assumed you had at first. However, upon further inspection of the snout.... it's just too long and pointy to be a 100% malamute snout. My guess would be either a long hair malamute/wolf cross or long hair malamute/husky cross.

Can't tell from the pictures- but a dead ringer would be if he had a blue or partially blue eye. I've never seen a malamute or wolf with a blue eye, so that would make it nearly impossiable to be a mal/wolf cross. Could still be a Mal/husky cross though.

I'm leaning towards a shaggy mal now.... eh' who knows.

Here's a pic of a wooly coated Malamute- similar, 'eh?

Here's some more information on the woolies. Notice in one of the pics near the bottom one of the malamute's is very small, much smaller than typical.

I agree with what you're saying, Doc. He's just between the averages of the Mals and Huskies. Not too big/too small, like I said.

His eyes, as you can pretty well see from my Avatar, are blue. But they are an extremely pale blue: the pigmentation is primarily around the pupil and the rest of the iris is for all intents and purposes white.

Although I think it disqualifies from breed standard, I bet there are blue-eyed malamutes around. Rare, and if you define a mal as not-blue-eyed, well, there won't be any. But that is the nature of breed-standards versus real-world animals.

Blue-eyed wolves are unusual, too, but they occur. 3% of wolves (although all pups are blue-eyed at first) have blue eyes according to something I once read--but I con't know the accuracy of that for a fact. I do have a collection of photos of blue-eyed wolves cluttering up a corner of a couple of my hard drives. Genetically, blue eyes are recessive traits, in wolves and dogs as well as humans. Since some wolf populations tend to be pretty isolated, it only makes sense that there would be a few with blue peepers.

That being said, your guess of a Long-haired mal/wolf cross is kindof what I've settled on in my mind as well, despite the blue eyes. He might be all domestic mutt, too. He sure has a lot of wolf-like behaviours, so I like to imagine he's more wolf than not. But we'll never know what his parents were, unless maybe he learns to speak English. :D And anyway, such classifications outside breed standards in the canine world are totally artificial human constructs. He is what he is!
