Pics from Moab in the stock 80, no lockers

Nice pics. I remember that drop on fins. My wife and I were out there in '04 with our Trooper. Saw a Samuri go arse over tea-kettle down that hill. Front tires were locked, sliding down the rock, and once they hit the sand, they stopped, the rest of the rig didn't. That's the point at which my wife desided we should do bulls canyon instead and I could come back later with my brother. The sammy was kinda comical, it had the proportions of a phone booth. As wide as it was long and twice as tall as it was wide.

Nice pics. My rig is same LX, same color, but I have lockers, and I've surprised a few Jeeps at Disney. It's amazing what you can do if you're careful. Glad you had fun. You're making those of us that live further away from Moab jealous.

BTW, anybody seen any 80's do the "hot tubs" in Hell's Revenge? Saw a Jeep Unlimited Rubicon, heavily modified come out of one, with his winch and some serious body damage after rear tires hit a nasty lip and shifted his whole line out. Almost vertical drop in to the tub and vertical climb out. Serious stuff.

I've done this one a couple of times in the 80. I wouldn't want to try the one next to it, tho.

Eric,

They're designed for the added stress of a locker right out of the box, and they were strengthened with the locker in mind - nonlocker models too. In stock form with maintained birfields you can beat on them. Modifications like lower gears and larger tires obviously add stress, and poor maintenance weakens parts. But Toyota designed them to take a licking and keep on ticking...

Nice work, don't let those pics find their way to your insurance rep.:D

You drove down Hell's Gate?

I have not seen that done....

You have to crawl DOWN into it, then UP out of it, right:confused:

Hey, that's no Land Cruiser...it's a Lexus! :grinpimp:

Thanks for the nice pics. You guys did real good!

I have not been to Moab since 1998. Those pics remind me I need to go back.

edit: Forgot to ask - which tire are you running and what pressure did you keep them at?

Tim, those are Pirelli Scorpions that were brand new on the truck when we bought it 8 months ago. They surprisingly did well and we aired down to about 25 ft/lbs. Will definitely upgrade to something with a better tread pattern and larger when these wear down a little bit.

Thanks Doug for answering:D , any kind of wheeling is more stressful on components. I don't think that anything we did was at all overly stressful for the 80.

Your first pic looks like you are going "in the out door" but I may be wrong.

I'll be getting more pics up tomorrow of our run on Steelbender. Had to get one more run in the day we were supposed to head back home. Took about 4 hours and was well worth it, BEAUTIFUL backcountry and scenery. First thing in the morning I'll get them up.

Is Steelbender the one that kinda ends with your choice of about a 5 foot drop with huge exposure to the right as you touch down, or if you go to the left you can go down a steeper/longer series of scary looking ledges and such?

That's a great trail.

Has anyone done Poison Spider in a stock 80? I've been on it several times with stock vehicles but never an 80. It's one of my personal favorites with the water fall, the wedgie, and you can do the side trip out to Launch Pad. But I've always wondered if some of the abrupt ledges above the water fall would take out the rear bumper corners.

Final pics, Steelbender

Ran out of space. Need to buy a star.

Dan,

I believe they closed the old entrance to the Gate therefore you have to go down it to be in a position to drive out of it. A few members of Wasatch have done it. All in 80s so far. I've yet to see a person dumb enough to drive a 40 down it. That would take some real balls.

Great Pics, Fins and Things is one of my favorite trails and I will be doing it again this year. There are some trails at Moab I would not do without the lift and sliders. The end of Kane Creek has two obstacles, mostly the waterfall that the sliders come in real handy.

Romer,

You wouldn't be referring to Jake last year during CM would you? Poor kid trashed his rockers that day. Sliders are a good thing on those ledges. 80's are ideal for moab. Long wheel base and nice heavy traction. There are few trails where i'd prefer the 40 over the 80. Now I just need to figure out a removable top on the 80 and i'll be set.

Awesome pics and wheeling, man! I'm curious as to how often, if ever, you hit the bottom of your front control arms?

For that matter, if and when you hit, what parts of your rig scraped?

On a couple of tall steps or drops in the 3 days there we scraped the control arms I think twice but nothing serious at all. The cat shields took a couple of scrapes also, I'm really liking the idea of cutting and turning them. No scrapes or touches on the rockers and a handful of scrapes on the front and rear bumper all the way underneath. That's it. I didn't try to intentionally see how close I could come to damage either though. I looked for the best route to keep rocks and ledges away from the cats and tail pipe.

concretejungle pulled cut and turn mod and raved of damaged saved for the cost of 65 bucks.... and then some sliders. way to go!!!

Awesome wheeling pics - thanks for sharing. Reminds me of when I actually used to take the time to go myself.

Kudos on the stock rig. Maybe - just maybe - Landcruisers were designed to do this???????

I had an 85 FJ60 that I wheeled through some pretty harry stuff - unlocked. It later got lifted, ARB's F&R, but I never got over being amazed at where the thing would go stock. I just wish I had taken pictures.

Bought that truck new for $15K in 1985. Drove it 82,000 miles over 13 years and sold it for $12K in 1998 after I got the '97 80 that I have now. What the h#^l was I thinking?
