i had a OME kit and a Dobinson kit, one on each of my LJ78s, both installed at the same time, both covered the same trails (one was my wife's DD and one was mine).
the OME would bottom out easily, the Dobinson kit could get air without bottoming out. i now have that same used kit on my present LJ78 (with PZTI engine installed) and recently it got air, it never bottomed out.
i love the Dobinson kit, and dislike the OME kits.

All 70 series threads are useless without pics!

I agree. Here's a pic of my mud covered Prado:

typical Prado, out of commission
:flipoff2:

Too funny. I thought someone might say that. Incidentally, she also tops out at 50km/hour before overheating. I don't think her head will explode anytime soon, thank goodness.

FYI - she's resting in the bed she made at the side of the trail while waiting on Jim BTW to fix the steering on his 45 during last summer's Ruby-Con Lite trip with the RMLCA.

(Ok, hijack over :hillbilly:)

Well - I changed out all the sway arm bushings and I'm liking the way she rides now. Still softer then my leaf sprung hilux (of course), but not rolly polly anymore.
I will post pics soon.

Wayne - So if I understand correctly, I for sure need a Pyro for EGT's and also an auxiliary guage to measure engine temperature?

the KZ is showing the same problems in Canada as the 2lte did when they were frist imported here so the same preventive issues should be adressed, for sure Pyro gauge, aftermarket coolant gauge to make sure what is happening inside.
then if the budget allows, ober sized exhaust, EGR block off (if equiped), turn up the boost but leave the fuel alone (if EGTs are showing high), larger rad if coolant temps show spiking. is your the "E" version?

typical upgrades.[/QUOTE]

Actually, it's the 1KZ-T engine. The 3.0 turbo diesel. What sort of mods do I need to do to save that head?

I picked her up today. I'm loving it so far. The ride is a little soft though. The previous owner installed a 2" OME lift. But the ride seems overly soft and "rolly polly". I know it needs new sway bar bushings for sure. But could it need shocks I wonder?

If the tranmission is an auto make sure you fit a decent oil cooler to the auto transmission.

i would start with pyro and aftermarket coolant.
if you see ANY spike or running warm then start on the other mods. better safe than "broke"/

ok - so i'll look for a pyro egt guage and a coolant guage. Any recommendations? Something functional yet not crazy priced.

gotoy - it's a 5 speed.

Mine own is a 1kz-te manual. To date never had an issue with temperature. Regular service and checking the coolents before a journey are the norm.

The 1kz-T had problems on the auto transmission, so usually they will install the cooler.

Well, any engine can go wrong. All I can say is give it a good old service and take it easy.

KZJ77 pics

OK some pics...finally...And by the way, once I replaced the bushings in the sway bar, I don't see any need to change out the shocks. In fact, I'm really beginning to like the way it rides now.

that is one of the problems with the KZJ78 series, the cost. you can get a nice HDJ81 for very close to the same price...
