Thanks. I might be in the market for a good set of wheels for winter tires. 16's would work right? Got any pics? Price?

I am still on the fence with the tires. The ones that are on it now are not too bad but could be replaced. And I always used to have a set winter tires. On the other hand, I could consider BFG's too as all year round tires because I don't want to spend money on two sets in one go. (and I have to add those TPMS sensors too)
My other vehicles have BFG's and they are not bad.
But I do prefer a separate set of winters because in the end it is not like you are spending extra money on tires. Two sets last twice as long.

I think they would work. But they may make the vehicle look older. I like the off-road look of 285/75/R16. Small rim, lots of tire. The extra rims are almost brand new. Came of a FL vehicle. I'll PM you with a price. I don't have to make money on them. I was going to use them on an off-road trailer, but I ended up buying a yellow pop-up :o.

At first I was planning to sets of tires as well. But I don't drive the LX too often. As a result the tires would outlast their rubber shelf life. Also, those 285's are heavy. Changing them over twice every year is a lot of work. Plus the storage. Hence winter tires year round. We have 7 months of winter anyway.

Okay, thanks, I've received your pm. Let me think about it.

It's raining pretty hard today and I took the LX for a drive. The tires that are on there now really have to go, they are the worst I have ever had on a vehicle. Slipping and sliding all over the place. A dirt road was a challenge and even on tarmac it was jumping on me. Just not safe. They gotta go a.s.a.p.

I am taking the vehicle in for undercoating tomorrow and I will have them quote me a new set of tires.
I'm not sure what to get and there are so many threads on the forum about tires that I am afraid to ask. And I hate it when smarta$$es tell me to use the search feature. doh:

They need to be safe, quiet and good looking. I might go bigger then stock although I don't want the speedo to be off too much and I don't want the fuel consumption to go up.
Using winters year round could be an option too because buying 4 new tires, (your) 4 rims, 4 new winters and 4 tpms sensors might be a bit much. Or good AT's I can use in snow.

I've owned the LX less then a week and already bought a set of weathertechs, a 2012 navigation dvd, an antenna, a BT35 Bluetooth adapter and AHC fluid :whoops:

I don't know, any suggestions?

I don't know how they perform in snow but I put BFG All Terrains on my 2004 with good results. Went one size larger than stock and they have no significant increase in noise but do have a stiffer ride. I lost a mpg or so that I think is more related to the weight of the tires than anything else.

Everyone has their reasons for liking what they like but I have BFG's (AT's and MT's) on all 3 of my cruisers and they wear well, look good and I've only had one sidewall failure in 15+ years. Someone else here may have a better suggestion for your application/weather.

... significant what?

I haven't purchased yet. But I have narrowed my search down to Duratecs or LTX AT2's.

I like the Duratecs for the tread pattern, ability to take studs. IMHO the better choice for off road.

I like the AT for it's long tread life, warranty, and ability to add road hazard insurance. IMHO the better choice for its on road capability.

Either way both a compromise I just need to decide what factors matter the most.

I love BFG AT tires. Good performance, long-lasting (current set is at 88k miles!), and good looking. I do notice that at 50% tread, winter driving performance goes downhill quite fast. I guess due to harder compound and less sipes?

My city sees a good amount of snow, but the roads are cleared pretty quick, so not too much driving on snow. If I were to live in an area with snow-covered roads all winter, I'd get snow tires. Look at 265/75/16 size, as it should be cheaper with more options. It would be worth it, in my opinion.

Yeah, it needs some serious rust prevention. I'd like to drive it a couple of years but cars come to Ontario to die.

Rust is a Land Cruiser's worst enemy. At least in this area. The yearly Krown applications I have been getting are quite helpful, but:

  • Krown is eating the seals around the hood, especially around the headlights. One of the applicators told me that they need to silicone spray the gaskets first. They are probably not covering them completely. Lookout when they do that.
  • It also seems to be deteriorating the seals at the bottom of the doors, where the two halves meet.
  • Check your upper rear door for rust. When I bought mine (5 years at that time), it needed a complete overhaul at the bodyshop! The base drag creates suction and all the salty mist ends up at the rear door.
  • The rear A/C lines still seem to rot out, even with Krown. Part of the line is run above the muffler heat shield, and they don't apply the undercoating in that area.
With the vehicle up quite high from the road, I suggest a full Krown application in year 1, and only an underspray in year 2 (and 3). And then start over. That may safe the seals. I've been Krowning my vehicle for 7 years now. No new rust since year 5. It is is an '00.

I just put 285-70-18 BFG AT's on our new to us Land Cruiser. They fit, look great, and should last for years to come. $206 a piece from Sears with a $50 rebate so they ended up being a pretty good deal. Good luck in your search.

I am thinking I will end up taking the BFG path too.
When my FJ40 needed new shoes, so I did a lot of reasearch and ended up with BFG AT's.
Then I started looking for tires for our '07 FJ Cruiser and ended up buying BFG AT's.
When I was shopping for tires for my '70 Chrysler Newport, I ended up with BFG's. Not AT's but still..
I am pretty sure I will end up with BFG AT's on my LX once everything is said and done.
No white lettering this time, promise
Sears doesn't sell tires here. The best I can find so far is at Canadian Tire. Not your size and a whopping $336.99 each (+13%tax) :frown:

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result.

Okay I have made my choice. I ordered Michelins LTX A-T2 275/65 18..

Having BFG's on all my other vehicles I thought I'd try these.

I got the LX back today with 4 new tires. I will make some pics tomorrow, it is too dark outside now.

There is still one problem I haven't solved yet.

A day before they changed the tires the tpms light went on. It didn't bothered me too much because I was going to change the tires anyway. The pressur in one of the tires seemed a bit low, but I didn't check.

But the light is still on with the new tires. I checked the pressure. The fronts are about 30 psi, the back ones 32 psi. I did not check the spare, but according to my manual it does not have a sensor.

I will try the reset the tpms tomorrow again. I tried today, but didn't wait 20 minutes.
Is this the correct procedure?

1) Tranny in Park
2) Start engine
3) Handbrake on
4) Push and hold the 'set' button until the light blinks 3 times, then let go
5) Leave the engine running for 20 minutes until the light goes out.

should I try anything else before running to the dealer?

I tried the reset the TPMS but the light stays on. Am I doing something wrong?
It's not blinking, just a solid light.

WOOHOOOO! The light is out. :bounce:

It turned out the be the spare tire. It was somewhat deflated so I topped it off and all is good !

My LX has a full spare with a sensor. It seems used so I think they used it during rotation. It still has the original Bridgestone Dueler on it.
I was beginning to worry that I would have to replace all the sensors. The batteries only last 6 to 8 years.

Does the owner's manual say there is no sensor in the spare tire or does it say the TPMS system will not indicate if the spare tire is low?

I'm wondering if one of your new tires doesn't have a sensor.

The manual states that there is no sensor in the spare tire. But the system does work with 5 sensors if you install one in the spare. I think the previous owner installed a sensor in the spare so that he could use it too when rotating the tires, thus extending thread life. The aluminum rim is identical to the other 4 so that would make sense.
I got a chance to check if all 'road' wheels had sensors. The metal valve stems are also an indication that there might be sensors. The spare also had a metal valve stem.
