I'm currently doing my second PHH (not on the same vehicle, thank goodness) and have purchased 2 feet of silicone hose at around $4 a foot. If anyone else needs some, let me know, you can have enough to do yours for free. The special happy 'constant tension' clamps cost more than the hose at $3+ each, so you're on your own for those. I believe NAPA has them but they may have to be ordered. I got mine and the hose at FleetPride, a diesel truck parts dealer, although the clamps I got may be too big for the job (smallest ones they had) so I may be going to NAPA for mine after all.

excuse this noob question but what is PHH hose?

Pesky Heater Hose- a difficult to service heater hose on an 80 series Land Cruiser. Difficult enough that you will go to the ends of the earth to make sure you never have to do it again- hence the use of silicone hose as a replacement. If that doesn't explain it, search it, you'll be entertained for hours. :D

Mine blew right after I got the rig, b4 I had a clue about the PHH or this site. Major PITA to replace.

Yeah, the one on my rig with 165K on the odo looked like a balloon, ready to pop anytime. Fortunately I read about the PHH on this board or I'd have never checked it until it was too late. The one on my wife's with 85K is leaking and getting replaced today.

There's a good article with pics in the latest 4WD Toyota Owner...

You have a PM!

Medtro, if you still have the part # for those clamps from NAPA, could you please post it?

Got mine done today. What a PITA. I cut the hose off after removing the clamps. When I looked at the inside, the rubber was deteriorated and cracked. This on a rig with 85K. Definitely a good job to do ASAP.

Spike, Did you remove the lower bolt?

Nope, couldn't get to it, and the pipe easily bent out about 1/2 inch, giving me about 3/4" between the pipe and the block nipple. I put some silicone dielectric grease on the inner surface of the hose, slid the whole thing onto the pipe coming down, then put the clamps over the hose and slid the hose onto the block nipple. Worked great. This was after trying the same technique with WD-40, the hose slid halfway onto the pipe and stuck there, wouldn't go further on or come off and I had to cut it off. Good thing I had extra. This hose fits perfect, unlike the standard 5/8" heater hose I used on my other 80 which was loose. The clamps were a bitch to tighten, but doable. I like the clamps, they tighten nice and smooth and have the 'sleeve' protection that keeps the hose away from the metal band's gear holes.

The hardest part of the job, knowing what I know now, is getting the spring clamp off the block nipple side of the original hose. The 'sardine can' clamp on the downpipe side has to be cut off with a Dremel or similar tool, but that spring clamp is tough to get a tool (pliers) on, and even when you finally do it's very difficult to pull it away from the block. I thought about cutting it too, but figured it's made of tougher stuff that the other clamp, it's tight to the block, and if I wasn't able to cut it completely it might make things even harder.

Upon further review of the 80 FAQ's it seems that people have luck using dish soap to lubricate the inside of the hose (also saw yet another creative use for KY Jelly). The dish soap might be a better solution, as I'm slightly worried my hose might move around a little. Both tube ends are flared, though, so the hose can't come off as long as the clamps stay on.

Also, according to information gleaned here and there, our climate might accelerate the deterioration of the PHH, as the coolant isn't cycled through the heater system as much as it is in colder climes. In other words, do it now, no matter how good it looks. Mine looked fine, but was seeping and the inside of the hose was trashed.

Spike... where did you find Silicone hose for $4 a foot? Sounds like a good source.

Eek, I was afraid you'd find me. Please don't hurt me! :D

I went to a local hose supplier, they had it for ~$3.50 but were out of stock and didn't think they'd get it for weeks. They sent me to a diesel truck parts supplier- apparently silicone hose is popular with the big trucks. They had it in stock for somewhere between $4 and $5 a foot. It's blue outside and orange inside, with a (nylon?) weave between. I described the application and asked the hose supplier what they recommended, this was it.

I didn't want to undermine your business, so I offered it only to the local guys here- I'm a little more loyal to them than you, I admit. :D

I wasn't huntin' you down... honestly. I was just interested in your source... Samco seems like it is getting pricier over the last couple months and supply has been getting scarcer for some reason. My cost per foot is 5X what you paid, although it is the lowest I could find Samco here in the states for.

Can you PM me the brand or specs?

Thanks.

The brand printed on it says 'Power Products'. I did an Internet search, but couldn't find specs. There's a short number, but that didn't turn up anything either. The counterperson at the supplier assured me it was extreme high temp hose, 100% silicone. It might be a local thing...? Perhaps there's something about Samco that makes it special. This stuff claims an I.D. of .62 (vs. .625 = 5/8ths) and fit nicely- not like the Gates 5/8ths I used on my other truck. I don't know if they just rounded off the thousanths or if it's actually less than 5/8ths.

Anyway, check with your local suppliers if you haven't already. Either Samco is special or you're being had.

Samco is crazy expensive and they are gearing down their production on MANY sizes of hose. There are alot of vehicle specific applications that they no longer sell kits for and some that they are in the middle of phasing out. Why? I do not know, but I found it disturbing that the only color kit available for the 2.7 Bi-Turbo Audi S4 is their SCREAMING ASS YELLOW color. Kinda hard to be stealthy with them suckers yellin at ya from under the bonnet.

Spike- maybe a FJ80 day where you can show us other 80 owners how you did it?

I'd love to know and I have no idea what it is.

Sure, I've got room for 2 rigs in my shop, maybe more outside in the dirt alley. Set it up. Find out what day works and I'll see if I'm free. Doesn't have to be at my house if there's a more convenient place, but I'm not comfortable with dragging my tools around.

You will need: 2.5 inches of 5/8ths hose, 2 clamps for same, 2 gallons of unmixed antifreeze or 3 gallons premixed, and whatever other hoses/parts you want to replace. Tools- as many different needle-nose pliers as you can carry, a Dremel-type cutoff tool, razor knife, typical wrenches/sockets, something to collect used anti-freeze in, and a jack and stands. I have all of the above, depending on how many show up. I'd prefer either only my tools or only your tools were used as much as possible.

Cool- I'll take your leftovers and pay ya for it. Your place and tools are fine. I'll buy lunch and bring some beers. This Sunday is Easter- doing anything this Saturday morning or next Saturday morning? Whichever is best for you.

I've got a lunch in Mesa to go to this Saturday, and Easter is taken. I'm hoping and praying to go 'wheeling the following weekend, can we keep it open, and whatever day there isn't a wheeling trip on I'll be available? Or, if it's just you, we could do it during the week- I need to take a look at my steering sometime soon anyway- that's a good excuse for the wife. :D

Anyone else interested? Perhaps we could give people a few weeks to make plans? Input?

-Spike
