Search and didn’t see anything, so figured I’d ask the group.

How are you guys storing your pistols in the GX? Specifically, I’m asking about securely storing them when away from the truck.

I know you can throw them in the locking glovebox, but I don’t like that for reasons.

Colorado is a state where we can legally conceal them without permit in a vehicle, and I keep mine open and accessible 90% of the time, but when leaving the vehicle in a metropolitan area or in certain other situations, I want to be able to secure it while driving or away yet keep it easily accessible, and need some ideas from you guys.

In my Tacoma, I had an underseat vault on a chain. Not my ideal setup, for accessibility, but cheap and somewhat effective the few times I used it. Problem with the GX is the underseat area is crowded and thus I can’t slide it under the front of the seat, only the rear.

Has anyone adapted a 4Runner or similar center console vault to the GX yet?

I'm looking forward to the answers to this question as I have the same dilemma. Consolevault and Locker Down don't have anything for the GX460, and I don't like the cheap lockbox mounted with a bike cable....

Yeah, for $30 or so they’re better than a loose stored pistol, but only just. Keeps the teen thugs from an easy smash and grab but that’s it.

I’m leaning towards installing a small bolt down vault type setup in the cargo area. Not driver accessible, which I’d like but not a must, and would be about as secure as it gets within reason.

The console vault idea is decent, solves lots of concerns, but comes at the cost ofusing the console for daily use item storage, which is a hard compromise for me to make.

With all the talent here, I’m sure someone’s come up with a creative and effective option...

I like that solution for normal carrying.

I’m specifically hoping for extra security though, locked inside something while locked in the car. If the wife and I take a hike in an area where I can’t carry, then I’d like there to be more than a smashed window between a criminal and the pistol.

My previous gx470 had a compartment in front of my home built drawers that was great for storing flyrods and other valuable items. I used it a lot and it was easy to access by just flipping the rear seat forward. Kind of a "no reason to think anything was stored there" situation. I will probably design something like this into the new drawer system. A person could probably add a lockable vault in there as well

I haven't seen anything for the 460 yet. I have both hidden and locking storage I can use in the rear when I need to, but nothing up front. I believe some of the 470s have successfully installed a console vault model that was for a different vehicle but which fit the dimensions of the GX console. But nothing similar for the 460 I am aware of. You may want to contact Console Vault with the dimensions of the console and see if they think they have anything that fits (or if they want to consider making one).

I think I have to get over the desire for it to be accessible to the driver while secured. In reality, the only time it’ll be locked up while I’m driving (or occupying the vehicle) is when I forget to get it out of storage before departing.

I’d like to avoid the console vault, mainly because they tend to consume the entire console storage area and I use that area for lots of stuff and don’t want to sacrifice it entirely. I should probably reach out to them about a box that’d fit but is shallow enough in the console to still accommodate a tray on top of it.

Storing it in the cargo area or behind the back seat would be a route I’d consider. Guess I need drawers now 🤔

I have the mindset that if i'm carrying it's going to be on me at all times. I'll take it off on long trips but it never stays in the vehicle when i'm not in it.

I only recently went through the steps to apply for my CCW, so that option will improve once the sheriff processes my license in 3-4 months. So the struggle won’t be limited by open carry issues (I know, I know) but I’ll still face some struggles as I am often entering areas where I can’t carry and storage isn’t offered or isn’t time friendly for short visits, so leaving it behind is occasionally desired (we’re talking military installations, etc).

Get a CCW.
I'm working on mine. Then there's no worries about where you keep it! ;)

I specifically purchased a Truckvault for this reason. WA law has changed and if someone breaks into your car and steals your firearm you could be held liable for the crimes the thief commits.

I prefer to eat at the bar versus a restaurant table. WA law doesn't allow concealed carry in a bar area of a restaurant.

Some trips I will carry multiple firearms, long gun, shotgun and more than one pistol. Again for me the Truckvault was the best choice.

Appreciate the insight fellas. Seems everyone’s secure storing in the rear in one fashion or another. Although up front was ideal, space is just too limited, so the rear works for me. Now I have plenty of an excuse to purchase some drawers that I already wanted.

On my person at all times.

For me, this is for the 1% of the time. Federal buildings, schools, bar, etc. All other times, on my person.

Understandable. At some point you just have to secure it the best you can conveniently accessible within the truck and hope for the best should you ever have a break-in. Personally I have very little to no reason to ever be inside of a federal building, we don't have kids so schools aren't an issue (and in Texas they are no longer gun free zones unless on the actual premises, colleges and universities are legal to CC now) and I rarely visit an actual bar and if I do then I shouldn't be carrying anyway.
