I've been looking for a new cooler rated for 7 to 10 days. Of course all the usual brands came up....

Having had great luck with their other products I decided to try out the Pelican 45QT Elite Cooler.

Total cost shipped to my door was $278.53

Here's how it arrived.

Now unboxed

Starting from the bottom. The feet are beefy and have a lot of grip.

The fold away handles are very comfortable.

To open the latches you press the red button and pull them up.

Close up of the latches closed and open.

Cooler lid up.

Minimum thickness of the lid and body is 2 inches all the way around.

The drain plug is located on the left side just below the fold down handle.

To open it up you just turn until it unscrews.

The internal portion of the drain is channeled and angled downward.

There are provisions at all four corners to attach a cable so your investment doesn't just walk away. There is also a beefy setup for a padlock.

And finally for a size comparison, here are two pictures of the cooler sitting in the back of my 1971 FJ40. First one is with both seats folded up, and the second one is pushed off to one side with the driver rear folded down. Amazingly there is still some leg room left.

I really can't wait to take this out for a real field test next month when I have some time off. I will update this thread with the performance review when I get back.

yup, looks very sturdy and well-made, not surprisingly for Pelican, but that's close to real fridge $ territory.

Enjoy a cool one for us.

it looks real good .. and wonder out of the cost factor you will consider any 12V fridge .:?

I would love to do a 12v fridge but needed a good cooler since my son will also use it for mountain man rendezvous. I also have a 55qt Coleman extreme and a real basic 38 qt Coleman.

What's the warranty on the cooler. Hinges, latches, etc.

This is from their website

COOLERS
PELICAN LIMITED LIFETIME GUARANTEE OF EXCELLENCE
Pelican Products, Inc. ("Pelican") guarantees its coolers for a lifetime against breakage or defects in workmanship. To the extent permitted by law, Pelican's liability is limited to the cooler and not its contents. This lifetime guarantee does not cover rubber feet, drain plug/spigot, gasket, or other cooler accessories, which Pelican warrants against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. Pelican coolers are not intended for the storage or transportation of hazardous substances. All warranty claims of any nature are barred if the cooler has been altered, damaged or in any way physically changed, or subjected to abuse, misuse, negligence or accident.

Sounds like the latches and hinges are covered. I can tell you from past experience Pelican is pretty cool about taking care of issues even when its not normally covered.

They currently have this same cooler at my local Costco for $179! If I didn't already have fridges, I might give them a try.

Salue

I think I'd go for a Yeti instead. With locks on it, it's IGBC bear resistant.

Looked at these a few months ago, liked them better than the Yeti's I've seen although I've not owned either. Just can't justify the cost for what I use a cooler for. Cracks me up when I see guys toting around $400 ice chests to keep their Bud Light cold for a night!(the vast majority of what I see them used for)

Just a quick update. I haven't had the chance to go on an extended camp out lately so I threw in 2 20lbs bags of ice into the cooler early last Sunday 07/21/13 morning. I then put it out on my patio and left it for 7 straight days. This morning I drained the water to see how much ice was actually still there. To my surprise when all the water drained out, I still had about 20lbs of ice left.

Not too bad for 7 days outside in the high 90's.

I have dealt with Pelican with warranty issues, they were awesome. I needed multiple replacement parts for multiple toolboxes we had. They didn't ask for any other info other than a name and mailing address, and sent the parts out really fast. If I haven't already bought my Edgestar, this would be high on the list.

By the way, how much does that thing weigh empty!?

7 days is very good from the little I remember about ice coolers

wow 7 days. cant wait to here how it does on a wheeling trip where you get into the cooler all day long
i bet you can still get solid 5 days plus on ice. how do you think it would last with dry ice?

hmmm

cheers
