^ Mate in oz had one of that vintage. 3 speed transmission and separate L/H and 2WD/4WD shifters. Ancient 4L petrol motor that had gobs of torque down low. Did well on the sand but horrible anywhere north of 45mph
Built like a tank and that's what convinced me to buy my mq patrol back in 1980. Had the choice to go with a diesel 40 or the diesel patrol. Chose the patrol and it was a good decision since it's still a SWB but has considerably more room in the back for supplies when heading out bush for a few weeks.
Aftermarket turbo to give the old sd33 a bit of help on the hwy. Had just installed a new alternator (GQ diesel version is pretty well a direct fit into the MQ and has the needed vacuum pump on back, for the power assisted brakes). Straps on the donaldson air filter assembly aren't yet cinched down.
