So gents and gals, I am going to be parting out the 87 FJ-60 I picked up this weekend.

First off - I am not going to start for a month or so, so hold off on requests for parts... I first need to make room for the parts I pull.

The reason for the post is that I have been thinking about the process of stripping the truck and I am wondering if anyone here has any advice. I am pretty good with tools and can do most of my own work - basically drawing the line at opening a transmission. And I have been going to pick and pulls my whole life, buy I have never parted out a whole truck. So, do any of you who have done this have any pointers? Anyone sat back afterwards and said, 'I should have done this ot thought of that'? I am doing the pull work outside and would like to be able to move the truck around a bit for as long as possible.

Thanks in advance.

BTW - Mud rocks. I freaking love this site.

Tip #1: Leave it a roller as long as possible. Sell the interior, electricals, engine & tranny first.
Then sell the axles, tires & steering while it is on the trailer ready for the crusher.

Tip #2: Be aware that there are a lot of tire kickers and timewasters. Do not list parts FS as make offer and buyer pays shipping. you will waste too much time dickering over prices and getting shipping quotes for people who are just window shopping. List it w/ a price and fixed shipping cost. Or list weight, tell people to get their own shipping quote.

Tip #3: ebay is your friend. Ebay forces the sale of parts within a week. what doesn't sell for $9.99, throw back in the truck for scrap weight.

The answer to the question depends on your intent for the parts
removed. If you have a need for certain parts, remove those and use
them.

Take off parts as they are requested by the buyer. If you are shipping out of country, don't be snookered into not using UPS.

You need a tracking number to insure the buyers gets the parts. Some buyers are burning some of the parts sellers on this board
by saying they never got the parts and getting the sale price back
from the seller from Paypal, etc. Sad, but true.

Take off parts only when they are bought. Get tracking numbers. Check out greyhound for shipping big items; I shipped 2 doors and a tailgate this way.

would you be willing to send me some pictures of the engone compartment. i put a new engine in my 83 fj60 and didn't label the heater hoses before i took them out. now i have everything together except the hoses. any help would be great. you can send pics to jpcm113@live.com thanks again, joe

break things into the smallest pieces possible. you will get more for it. for example, rather than selling a complete engine for 700 bucks, sell all the assecories, head, block, etc. It pays off in the end. Good luck

Tomorrow when it is sunny I will take some pictures of both my 84 and the 87 to you.

some parts most will want, will be the same ones that are worn out or rusty on yours...ie not worth selling.

you'll end up with a good size pile going to the scrap yard.
