My 75FJ40 was allegedly a full frame off resto about one year ago. The builder also claimed to have applied 6 coats of clear over the camo paint job. It has at best 2 coats of clear. I now have lots of orange peel and bubbles. Can I wet sand the clear now without doing damage, especially to the camo paint under the clear? Thanks.

It's best to post pics of the areas you are concerned with. If you have "bubbles" that normally means it's compromised under the base color. If that's the case you'll need to get some 180 grit paper and a DA sander and let loose. Biggest problem you are going to have is making it look correct since it's a camo job with clear. Almost impossible to blend that correctly without doing an entire section of the body. Never seen a camo paintjob with clear on top:meh:??

Don't have pictures of problem area at this time. I was afraid of what you described, sanding down to the metal. There is no way to match the camo paint job. Here is a picture of the vehicle. Thank you.

That's an awesome camo - however, the "not-stock" nature of this truck begs the question - why take the time and effort to do anything to it? Unless you're planning on showing it, I'd just run it :meh: The camo would probably camouflage the orange peel unless you're really looking for it.

I'm a big fan of the 20/20 rule: looks good going by at 20 miles per hour from 20 feet away...to each their own though!

Very cool 40!

Thanks, I like many things about it. I want perfection but, you are right, its a custom vehicle. The bubbles and orange peel really bug me. I am worried about rust, which I am already seeing in this paint job that is only about 1 year old. I have to keep it outside on the east coast and this winter was tough on it.

I think your use of the word "allegedly" in the first post says it all, considering what you are seeing after only one year. :(

East coast, winter = rusty cruiser...

What usually happens is they didn't seal any filler they put on it well, and it has absorbed moisture causing bad bondo and rust under the paint.

Doing one now with the same issues, back to bare metal and weld in patches, pin holes with bondo on top doesn't work..

Moisture goes thru the pin holes and expands the bondo. I bet that is what you are seeing... Look behind where you see bubbles you might be surprised..

any update, just wondering if I was right,

What wheels are those? Centerline ?
