You guys should have seen Lantank diagnose a bad/intermittent center locking differential switch in 5 minutes. Including banging it on the driveway and getting it to work.

I bought a new one anyway and kept the old one as spare. Bottom line, the man knows what he's talking about, and I am lucky to afford 5 minutes of his time :)

having been a field engineer for over 30 years, my perspective is that this circuit is about a 1.5 on a complexity scale of 10 being the most complex.

I honestly don't see a dealer tech being able to handle this without an inordinate amount of drama.

Quite possibly. Your experience is unfortunately typical. Sometimes people don't give a rats ass and won't spend the time to diagnose it.

In this case, I'll bet that both techs tested the circuit and then followed the repair manual.

I'll say it again. If a Lexus master tech says its in the trans, that's very easy to verify. Just take the sensor out and look thru the hole with a mirror. Compare to known-good vehicle and you're done with the diagnosis. Maybe jack it up off the ground so you can spin the propshaft. Lock the center diff first (low range will do it).

I don't have a dog in this fight. But I know a few master techs. They know their stuff.

Update: ECU is fine, Cabling is fine, sensor is fine. Its the reluctor (for sure).

The service manager gave me very good overview of what they had done and what the found. I was actually very surprised that he spent nearly 45 minutues with me going over options, looking up labour times, PN etc. My experience with dealers has always been poor, and I was reluctant to go to Lexus. Although they couldnt fix the issue, the service was good. He cut the bill by 40% because they werent able to fix it. (Yes it was still expensive, but it was an honourable gesture).

Lexus confirmed the reluctor because they happend to have another 450 come in at the end of day. They compared inspection ports, and mine was definitely missing a part.

This morning took it to very good trans shop and they too confirmed "missing reluctor". They have yet to go inside, but the suspicion is that it was installed incorrectly or the previous shop forgot to put it back after the last job.

More tomorrow.
