My first CEL on my 06 LC at 130k. CEL came on more than year ago with P0456, I erased code, came on for same code 6 months later, then one month with both P0456 and P0441, then a week, then every day. As everyone does, I replaced the gas cap with OEM, CEL back same day.

In the service manual, it describes how codes are trigged. I concluded that the most likely component to trig both P0456 (small leak) and P0441 (incorrect purge flow) simultaneously is the VSV at the intake manifold. I removed the VSV to check it on my bench, it did not seal 100% with a vacuum applied on a port, I applied 12 VDC to it, solenoid makes a light click and the valve did not opened. I blew compressed air to it with 12 VDC applied and it fully opened and sealed a bit tighter. Reinstalled it, CEL back after a week. I rechecked it on my and did not open with 12 VDC applied. Ordered a new VSV P/N 90910-12259, the new valve makes a much louder click, seals 100% when closed and fully opens when 12 VDC applied. Installed the new VSV, CEL did not came back on after two weeks.

If you get both P0441 and P0456, look at a defective VSV. Take into account that the valve can be intermittent like mine.

For those of use that do not what, what is the "VSV"?

Spike and Outdoorsman, sorry about not explaining everything, this thread is about EVAP control system, not related to EGR. There are more than one VSV on the 100, the VSV I referred to is named the Purge VSV for the canister, it closes or opens the port of the charcoal canister's purge line. I attached a drawing showing the location of the Purge VSV.

Hope this helps.

So it's the charcoal canister purge valve.
I had to replace that on my Corolla before.

Just adding my story with these codes on my 06 100 series.

Most people don't have any symptoms with these codes but I did. Car was initially hard to start after the lights came on. Either it would die or idle rough. After three or four attempts at starting it would run normally.

At first just the CEL light came on, then the traction lights came on as well. New gas cap fixed it, had dropped the old one the day before and I guess it cracked given the small puddle of gasoline behind the fuel door, lights went off the next day and started up fine every time.

New gas cap fixed mine too. I had a "gross" large leak forgot code #. Been a month with no cel. I didn't have any adverse performance.
