Hi Mud --

I had a recent cooling system snafu that resulted in a few minutes of overheating. The gauge didn't get in the red, but got close to it.

System is now re-filled with Toyota coolant and everything seems to be fine.

Is there anything I should check for that could have gotten damaged? Or is this something (e.g., head gasket) that would show up down the line?

We'll be heading out on a ~3,000 trip in a few weeks.

Thanks!

Grumvee

If it didn't get in the red I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure you're gonna change the oil before your trip. If thats all good with no other symptoms ride out and enjoy.

Hey there Grumvee,

What was the snafu? Wrong fluid? Missing fluid? Diluted fluid? Bad pump? A leak?

Hose came off leading to low coolant

You can send a sample of used oil off for standard analysis and one of the things they check for is early signs of head gasket failure. They will catch this far before it turns into a mechanical operating problem.

Also the kits that check for exhaust gasses in the coolant.

Basically if it didn’t hit the red and is acting normally at this point I’d just run it and keep a close eye on things.
