Tires... As you've probably seen that's an endless debate on Mud and everyone has an opinion.
On my 2000 I still have the LTX's and probably will stay that way since it won't see lots of off-road duty any time soon. It doesn't seem that most owners like them but as far as road manners go, I think they're hard to beat. Certainly not an off-road tire, but I've had my 80 (with stock LTX's) in some pretty dicey situations (read: Uwharrie, pouring rain, slick rocks and slippery clay) and they've been adequate. Not saying they outperformed the other more aggressive tires in the group, but they got me back to the road without body damage. Ask Concretejungle - he's had some good laughs and plenty of comments about the LTX's.

I think the biggest drawback for most folks is $$$, they aren't cheap but they'll last.
When I need new tires for the 2000, I will upgrade from the stock 275/70r16 to a 285/75/r16. Fills out the wheel wells better and looks better aesthetically IMO. No worries about rubbing or bumping either. They'll fit and perform fine.
I know guys that run the BFG's and like them but they are a little more $$ and not ideal for daily road time IMO. There are cheaper alternatives for a more aggressive tire that is going to see daily road use and quicker wear as a result.
2 of the most popular more aggressive tire alternatives for the 100 (keeping in mind some semblance of budget and road manners) are the Yokohama Geolander AT+II and the Nitto Terra Grappler. Both have acceptable road manners but give you a more aggressive tread pattern for your off pavement endeavors. And, they are both reasonably priced.
I have the Nittos on my 98 and really like them. I have the 295/75r16's with an OME lift and I am happy with the setup and performance on road and off.
If your 98 doesn't have a lift and you're not getting one any time soon, you can't go wrong with either the Yokohama or Nitto in the 285/75r16.
FYI - I recently bought a spare NTG for my 98 and I paid $120 out the door. I think the YG's may even be a bit less expensive but don't have any real life feedback on those...
Of course, you could always do like Tad and throw some insane 34" Swampers on there and call it a day!!

He has the luxury of having two sets of tires and rims...
Is that clear as Mud???
