I have a '96 FZJ 80 that has trouble going into overdrive when it's cold. I run the truck for about 1 min before I start driving and it doesn't shift into overdrive until around 2 mi. or so depending on how cold it is (40 deg. down to 0 so far). It did not do this last year. Fluids were serviced by stealer in the summer (for the last time). Any suggestions?

That is totally normal.

Like yomoma said, that's how it's supposed to work.

It does that so the engine does not lug when it is not warmed up. Better for the truck and another example of toyota engineering.
Cheers,

I just drove a Toyota Echo loaner car and it wouldn't shift into 3rd on the auto until it was warm (3sp auto). For a minute I thought it was screwy but as soon as the "cold" light went out it shifted up into 3rd. Weird but makes sense.

What a noisy, goofy car.
