Hi, I have a 1990 cruiser with an A440F trasnmission the output shaft was striped at the splines also it looks like this is a comon problem on A440f trans I found the same problem on two other transmissions, also the main gear was triped is there an out put shaft that replaces the stock one? also what is the name of the transfer case for this vehicle?

Take a look here: McNamara Gear for info on a replacement gear that will allow you to work from unused portions of the shaft splines. If you need to source a transfer rebuild kit, I'd call Kurt from Cruiser Outfitters (google, or look for the user "cruiseroutfit" here on mud). I replaced my input gear with one of McNamara's this summer, and a number of others with 62s have as well.

what that guy said, tho ive never had the problem...

may have something to do with me not owning any auto cruisers.;)

Never had a problem with any of our cruisers with this, yet. MIke

Would anyone recommend using the McNamara Gear to "prevent" this type of wear from occurring or would you only use it in cases where the wear has already happened??

Seems like anything which spreeds out the contact surface would be better. Mike

I also put the mcnamara gear in this summer and am very very pleased with the purchase.

I could see this being used as a preventative measure also. I would be willing to say that any A440 that has the miles that most of them have would have spline wear and would be needing the mcnamara gear anyways.

Micah, How long and how much did you invest in time and money. Did you leave the trans. on the cruiser? MIke

This past summer the gear was $300 US plus post from Aus. As for a prevention measure, I wouldn't tear a perfectly good transfer open to do it, but if you have the typical clunk going between P and R, and are going to be rebuilding anyway (in my case due to a toasted seal between the tranny and transfer) it's likely a wise move for stemming the growth of the clunk, and avoiding the possibility of complete spline destruction. :meh:

Well I did the mcnamara gear when I rebuilt my xfercase. I spent around $600 for the gear and about $100 for the xfercase rebuild kit. My truck was down for about a week and a half. But most of that was waiting for the gear to get in from Australia. I think if you already ordered the rebuild kit and the gear before you tore the case apart you could get it done in a few days. Yes I left the tranny in the cruiser.

I have one for sale with the PTO gear . It has 3,500 km ( 2,200 miles) on it - still virtually new. Bought it last spring. I then decided to get a set of Marks' gears, so I had McNamar make up another one with the Mark's Gears for the 3.05 low transfer gear, so when I installed the Marks gears I removed the McNamara gear, with the stock gear on it. Comes with the PTO gear - uses 56 mm of previously unused spline on the transmission output shaft. Picture below.
