Out Of Curiosity: Why No Gasket Btwn Spindle And Dust Cover?

Yea, I'm thinking things through too much but why no gasket between the outer spindle side and the inner dust cover side? There's one between the knuckle and the spindle and then between the dust cover and the dust seal but as far as I know, none between the spindle and the dust cover. I would think when submerged that would allow water to present problems? Would there be anything wrong with simply ordering another gasket like the one between the knuckle and spindle and putting it in there? Thanks. :cheers:
 
Wouldn't the inner dust cover's rubber lipped seal keep the wheel bearings protected? I'm not looking at a diagram, but think this is so. However, I cannot see a problem with the extra gasket unless it's compression would impact proper spindle bolt final torque. I seem to recall that the bottom of the gasket crosses some kind of open space or something I've always wondered about? In other words, a notch or something for drainage that would make the extra gasket a non helper?

Overall, it seems like a good idea and would resolve that reassembly "OK, which side does the gasket go on..?" issue handily. I always have to go back to the diagram before tightening that multi part, multi gasket 7 layer sandwich and at least once had to change it.

Hi Doug, thanks, yes I think that the "dust seal" lip would work to protect the hub and all its internals, what I was talking about was the gasket that goes between the "dust cover" and the dust seal and just thinking that having another one of those between the spindle and the dust cover might make things that much more protected. You are absolutely right (good memory) that there is a notch that would prolly allow things both in and out and I guess that the bolts themselves would prevent water from creeping through the bolt holes so another gasket is prolly not going to do there. I guess what I'm wondering about more than anything is almost by design that area seems so open? Anyways, Mr. T had his reasons I'm sure. Thanks again. :cheers:
 
two chambers are beeing sealed in that area the knuckle andthe inner hub both of witch are positive seals

the pourpose of the dust seal is to form that thierd chamber to keep grit & funk from attacking the rotating inner bearing seal, the dust seal is not a posiive seal more like a dirt deflector keepign the majority of stuff out but not all, the drain at the bottom is to allow anything that does get in there to fall out with gravity. has a similar pourpose to the felt on the wiper seals, the felt cleans crap off the "ball" before it can damage the rubber seal.

if you add another seal be aware what effect this will have on the position of the brak backing plate and where the dust seal rides on the hub, I am guessing there is enough room for this added thickness but check to be sure.
