My early model steering box is
shot. It had gotten to the point
that Gundy had about 6 inches
of slop in the steering wheel.
I ordered a used one to save a
buck. Piece of crap. Grrrrrrrr
Found a place on the left coast
that had a rebuilt one with a
1 year warranty. $$$ heck the
core charge is $200. Yikes.
It should be here next week.
Sorry for the rant. You'd think
I'd be numb to the costs of these
Beasts after 2 plus decades.
Oh well, new tie rod, relay rod,
steering box and 4 new 33x9.5s
ought to keep Gundy happy for
a while.

You should have checked with S.O.R. Mauldin (Sheppard Off Road). From the looks of that hoard, I'm sure he had at least one! :D At least you're good to go for another 30 years!

Early boxes in good shape are rarer than hen's teeth. :hillbilly:
The streering shaft is one piece from the steering wheel to the box.
No rag joint or any way to separate the box from the shaft. Real he-man
steering. :grinpimp:

You could ask Alex. He might have one. SInce he took his out. That's one thing I don't have.

Just one.

I really want a rebuilt. Yeah I
know, "a fool and his money
are soon parted."
Hell, I rebuilt my 3 speed.
:hillbilly:

Why is it always this way?

First off the new box was for a later model. OK, just send me the right box.
Oh, it IS the right box? Well picture exchanges and weeks later they ADMIT
I know what I'm talking about. DUH! Now it seems they DON'T have an early model
box. They DID give me my $$$ back.
Now I had to find another supplier with an early box. Found a rebuilt on the West coast.
I'm kinda busy right now so I let a shop replace the box, tie rod and relay rods.
Well, I pick up Gundy and the slop is just as bad. GRRRRRRRRR.
Had the new 33x9.5s installed but need to get this steering right before the alignment
gets done.
I adjusted the box and that helped but still it SUCKED.
Then I examined for just where the slop remains. It is in the rod where
the pitman arm attaches. The arm moves an inch in the rod before affecting movement in
the rod. WTF?
This morning I remove the cotter pin and notice the slot isn't showing in the "plug" screw.
WTF?
VERY CAREFULLY I use vise grips and grab the couple of threads showing to remove the plug end.
HOLY COW! The shop put the plug in backwards with the slotted end going into the rod.
I correctly installed the plug with the adjustment slot sticking out and BAM....steering is
nice and tight. :grinpimp:
Every time a shop touches Gundy it just reaffirms why I HATE for shops to touch my stuff.
I'm crossing my fingers about letting a shop do the alignment.

glad you got it figured out!

I hear you on shops....i had a shop replace my rear d-shaft u-joints a couple weeks ago and I get it back with a worse vibration than before...:bang:

That's a bummer for sure. Maybe it's out of phase?
Drove the 40 for about 20 miles this morning. What a difference
tight steering makes. Gives the whole truck a new feel.
I also hooked up the heater since it is officially winter today. :hillbilly:

Glad to hear that Gundy's back on the straight and narrow, but I share your fear of enlisting help. Good Luck on the alignment. Don't think you want to drive all the way to Piedmont, but there is a good alignment shop in town (at Piedmont Tire). I stood and watched while he aligned. Turns out the guy is an old dirt track racer, and raced against the fam. Top notch alignment too.
