Time to send an email or two . . . .

A bill (H.B. 3147) has been introduced in the Oregon legislature that would severely limit vehicle suspension, body lift and wheel/tire alterations. Specifically, H.B. 3147 would ban vehicles whose bumpers are elevated more than 3 inches over the original manufactured bumper clearance. Identical legislation was last introduced in Oregon in 2001.

So ....what can we do about it ??

Send an email - if you want, all you have to do is copy/paste and it'll take less than 5 minutes. Legislators have a general rule of thumb that each letter or email is representative of the opinion of hundred or thousands of their constituents, this is based of the premise that only 1 in several hundred or thousand will actually take the time, the rest they assume are sitting on their asses doing nothing.

Sample letter, use "H.B. 3147 prohibiting bumper clearance exceeding original manufactured bumper clearance" or something similar in the email subject line
Dear Representative,

I'm writing you to please oppose H.B. 3147. This bill is a disservice for those of us that spend time with our families out in the wilderness - camping, hunting, and traveling off-road. The State Forestry, and BLM are not maintaining their roads as they used to due to economic, environmental and political reasons. Because of this we need more capable vehicles to be able to enjoy the forests and wilderness in and around Oregon. Sometimes, this means raising our vehicles to various heights above factory settings to provide additional ground clearance. A stock vehicle, with its lower level of clearance, would be more likely to gouge and tear up the road than one with a lift.

In the economic hardship that we are currently in, it would be a failure to many to pass this bill. I encourage you to talk to the many companies who sell equipment that would be affected by this bill. Les Schwab Tires, Cage Offroad, Sky Offroad, Metal Tech, and many other companies are based in Oregon. Many more nationally incorporated businesses and franchises operating in Oregon that cater to the truck market would also be affected. These are companies that employ locally and benefit their local community.

Further, consider the hardship and expense of individual citizens required to remove equipment and modifications that were bought with their hard earned money. This equipment would now be worthless since no one in the state of Oregon would be able to use it. Consider also the expense of purchasing new components required to replace the equipment removed, and you can begin to see how this could easily cost into the thousands for individual citizens. This would be a severe financial disservice to your constituents to say the least, not to mention the many Search and Rescue or Fire volunteers who use their own vehicles in the service of aiding the public.

For all these reasons, please vote to oppose H.B. 3147.

Sincerely,
(Obviously, if you want to use the sample letter, don't forget to put your name at the bottom)

Your government hard at work! I'm just taking a wild guess here but I'll bet there's a hundred thousand things on the To-Do list for the Oregon legislature to do. Where in the list was this located?? Guess the truck makers will have to come out with multiple bumper mounts from the factory so we can order an OEM replacement direct and still be in compliance. :)

Thanks for the links, 5 sent also.

I dont see any reference on the state website as to why this silly bill was even introduced?
Emails sent!

Probably in response to a sub compact submarining under a Domestic with too much lift. you've all seen them, these things ridiculous turd-bags:

If the legislature gave a more realistic number to the change in bumper height, I would probably be less against it - 12" over stock for example, though 16" should probably cover just about everyone on this forum.

Some elected official probably lost a loved one in an accident involving a rig with a lift kit. Never mind that all of us on the highway are surrounded by Semis that will squash anyone if someone makes an error in judgement. Do you see a bill to eliminate that danger from the highways? Of course not. They see our lift kits and bumpers as some form of social deviation from the norm, something that has to be a threat. Even worse, something we do on purpose to injure people. Jeeez they ought to work on things we need like jobs and jobs, oh yes, and jobs. Keep your hands off my rig!

Well then, as my buddy Donald would say.....You're Fired !!!:)

got my form letter
Dear Mr. Fritzinger,

Thank you for writing and sharing you concerns about House Bill 3147. I appreciate hearing your perspective.

HB 3147 has been referred to the House Committee on Transportation and Economic Development, of which I am co-chair. With our busy schedule this session, I do not anticipate that we will have time to hear this bill or move it out of committee to the floor for a vote. If the bill does receive a hearing, I will be sure to keep your thoughts in mind. If you would like to follow its progress just in case, you can do so here: HB 3147.

Please feel free to keep in touch.

Best,

Tobias
