Thanks Cowboy for the additional information and photos--driving an HJ60 and putting in a larger fuel tank (factory tank got a hole anyways--so going bigger) so good to know distances...
?--how about access; is it totally blocked or just 'not recommended' in those locations that are 'closed'? Not that I want to get stuck by myself, but do enjoy getting out where there are less tire tracks........

Driving a diesel definitively haves advantage on fuel economy.
Most of the roads that are closed are completed blocked or the rd numbers are removed. Some of them are just temporary and some of them definitely ( look definitely from my view of point because of the big number of logs that are one them, unmaintain the long time or washed out ). I had rd/s that where completed gone, I drove up and down on the rd that will give access to this rd and I don't found any signs of the rd that I was looking.
You will be in that situation and you will have choice to be there where are less tire track or no tracks at all, just be prepare for lots scratches on the cruiser :hillbilly:

Thanks for the warnings and clarification--I hadn't thought about brush--I expect that on the west side of the Cascades--hadn't thought much about the east side.

That is a concern...lines in the dust on the side of the rig are different than actual damage to the clear coat--though older, the HJ60 has pretty nice paint overall and am setting it up for 'adventure' but also to be 'nice' as it is a company rig and will be for daily driving to clients and job sites--tough choices to make--thanks again for the warning.

My 85 Fj60 had, had, great paint, now looks like the pic. above. It's a truck and I wanted to go over there on and atv trail.

Is hard to keep the truck shiny when you use the same truck for business and of road.
When I bought my 80 was like a truck mall, perfect paint, shiny and now, is like somebody took a steel brush and brushed the truck from the windows to all down to the tires and I am happy how is looking :hillbilly:.. My friend she doesn't want anymore to ride with me on her church clothes how clean is the truck inside ( dust, not mc donald french fries and chicken bones :doh: )
Actually, two days ago I noticed on the rear aluminum step growing grass from how healthy is the soil there :grinpimp:. Anyway, the engine and under truck the frame is clean and washed always before to go in the woods, Noxious Weed Control is very important to have in mind before to get out in the wild :) .

I looked over my travel management notebook and I need to edit my miles for this trip. The OBCDR 5 from Portland to Goose Lake was 1.464.5 miles, including lost for two hours in Wala Wala :doh: and others detours:grinpimp:
Total round trip miles Portland to Portland was 1.833.3 miles :)

Was a great, long and short ride at the same time, I had been on the rd usually from 8 am to 7 PM every day and almost with out breakfast and lunch. No time, to many to see behind every corner....:steer:

I am hopping next summer to do Washington Backcountry Discovery Route ( I explored Washington side from Bridge of Gods up to Mt Rain and is a great state with a great green view ) or a Alaska trip using main Canadian forest service roads for speed up little beet the trip and see some Canada wilderness too and not be on the freeway for few days.
Always I will be happy to do again the OBCDR 5 or 3. The other two route can be done in a 3 day weekend if all go by the book and I am looking to do this too.
You will be the first on the list if I will run a group :hillbilly:

Sounds like a plan!
I have family up in Three Sisters, so I may take a week to visit them and one of the shorter trails next summer.
This coming summer is going to be my big rush to get my rig built up to where I want it (winch, sliders, RV cam) but trips like the ones you've shared on this thread are the reason I bought my truck in the first place!

Three Sisters is a beautiful place, full of lakes and rivers, great mountain views and lots of trails to drive. OBCDR3 is passing that area too. By a Deschutes National Forest Map and Willamette National Forest Map when you will visit your family.
With that tools you will get on your truck you will not be worry to drive on any trails. My cruiser is full stock and I never had problem to drive on any trails beside then when sometime the cruiser is to wide or tall for some of the trails and I need to push a way the vegetation or to raise the tree branches with ropes :hillbilly: . I don't like to cut anything that stand up and is green if I am not in survive mood. We had enough in the past some our national forest destroyed complete....

Thanks for sharing...this is definitely in the plans next year. I am thinking about taking two weeks off and hitting both the OBDR and WBDR late next summer. Thanks for the pics...inspiring!

You can try to do both routes at once, start from Canada to all the way to California.:clap:
I was thinking to do this sometime in the future, WBDR from Canada to OBCDR5 and return on OBCDR 3 home.

Yeah, that sounds good. I may modify my plans and take three weeks off. Take Route 3 down to the border with CA, cut across to Lakeview, and then do Route 5 up to WA, then the WBDR to Canada. Wrap the trip up with some exploring in Canada and Vancouver before jetting back to Eugene on the 5.
 
A tour like that is like a dream.
You can get from WBCDR on Hwy 3 and from there to Hwy 1 and all the way to Vancouver and return back on I5 to Eugene.
Parts of Hwy 3 follow a old mid 19 century gold rush trail and will be a great ride with lots farms and great mountains.
You will not be disappointed with Hwy 1 also. Are a amazing views along the east coast of Vancouver Island all the way to the Mile 0.
 
Thanks for the input. Yeah, I have been wanting to check out Vancouver Island and further north into Canada for quite some time. Maybe in a couple of years.

But first got to do the OBDR and WBDR.

Again, thanks for the pics. I'll post up a bunch next year after I do the trip.
