Biggest recommendation is having a reliable rig and good tires. I have spent time poring over maps and GPS routes and there are some sections of the route that are pretty remote. Carry a second battery and basic tools and parts. Gas isn't much of an issue...the biggest gap between gas stations was about 160 miles. I would recommend purchasing the GPS tracks from treknow.com and getting some maps as well. Be prepared to have a good time and get used to acquiring some scratches on the rig!

Thanks for the info. I'm not afraid to scratch my truck at all. I have an FJ 80 with 315's on it. I will get that GPS tracks from them. Thanks Again

For me the first priority was gasoline and gasoline, my 80 is a gasalcoholic :hillbilly: !! I did lots road trip to buy gasoline and I lost good money and time because of this. Next time, I will have one or two more Jerry can. Now I have just one.
Air filter is good to have one extra with you. I have posted the pic with the air filter after few hundred miles and you will see how dirty was.
Anything else, just hit the rd before the rod's will be closed for good!

Good luck and have fun

I plan on carrying two if not three cans of fuel. I'm going to be doing mostly back country travel from wisconsin all the way out and yes there are times when my 80 also gulps gas.

I don't know if you already bought the CD from Treknow or not, but I can sell you mine if you want. I only used it once to pull the tracks off, so it is pristine. Treknow want $39.95 for the CD...I would sell you mine for $20 if you want to save some money. Just an idea...

I would buy that from you. Do you have a PayPal account?
Thanks

Anybody did this route again on last two years? I'm looking to see from personal experience how its the rd conditon and any closers on the rd. I know the feds had in plan to lock some parts of East Oregon?
Thanks:beer:

Hey CowboyUp,

I haven't been on the OBCDR since 2012, and even then I didn't do very much of it. But everything was open at that point (besides opening and closing cattle gates). I have been trying to save up vacation to take three weeks off and do the whole thing, but with a trip to the Philippines this year and sailing in San Juans and British Columbia next year, the soonest realistic trip for me is in 2016.

I will be able to do a couple of the route 5 sections near Christmas Valley over Memorial Day weekend, so I'll let you know how those are. I did get the whole OBCDR and WABDR routes plugged into Google Earth and got a preliminary three week itinerary planned. Hopefully I can make it happen in the next couple of years.

If you do hit some sections this year, please post up your results and pics. I'll find the pics of what I did in 2012 tonight and post them up tomorrow or over the weekend.

Hi
Thanks for the info! Well, you still had some trips done under the belt:)
I had been travel in last two years or so on other places then OBCDR and is a blast driving on the Oregon back country roads . I had been on Central of Oregon working last summer and I did some driving on OBCDR 3 too, just to remember the old good times.
One day, I hope to do whole route on OBCDR 5 & WADBR too. 3 weeks its not to bad at all. For me then will 4 weeks :hillbilly:
I will keep the eyes on the forum to see that pictures :)

It got increasingly rainy during the day...which made for awesome photos, but not so fun driving on stock Michelin tires in mud...

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the pics!!!! I hope to get some time and visit this place again.
I used stock tires too at that that time and after I got a better mud tires definitely is a plus to have mud tires.
How its with the gas station in that area? I know from experience that some of them are getting closed almost over night..
Have fun!

Yeah, most gas stations close up at 5 or 6. The Chevron in Silver Lake sells premium with no ethanol...pricey, but worth it. They close up at 6 I think. The gas station in Christmas Valley is open later I think.

Looks like I won't be going this year...got too much to do around the house over Memorial Day weekend. Oh well, next year it is.
