Hate to do this but the family is growing and we need to upgrade to a larger cruiser. It is primarily used as a get around vehicle on expeditions to the mountains and Moab. Most of the miles we have put on it are while towing.
Here is a little history as told to me by the previous owner. We affectionately refer to the cruiser as "Frankie" in honor of its original owner Frank Torrez who purchased it on 10/07/70 in San Bernardino, Cal. Frank drove it sparingly until he took ill in 1985. It was garaged until his death in 2007. It changed hands twice in the following two years but never titled. Neither owner could get it running properly. I purchased it on 12/23/2008. It took awhile to get it running right but once we did we had a very strong and smooth running rig. It is essentially a two owner, completely stock and all original 1970 FJ40.
The previous owner who apparently was familiar with the Torrez family claimed that the cruiser only had 52,700 original miles on it and that the odometer worked. It has never worked for me. I have a service record from a mechanic who checked it out for me in Phoenix and the mileage was 52,649. That is what it reads today. But I'm reasonably certain that was the original mileage. I estimated I put less than a 1000 miles a year on it, mostly towing, which would put the mileage at around 59,000 miles.
Runs and drives great. Engine is very strong.
Body is solid, no rust except for light surface rust around some of the screws, bolts and hinges.
Paint is original and has a tremendous shine when detailed. There are a few scratches and chips but nothing major, all that shows through is the red primer. Frank had flairs on the rear. The previous owner removed them and inserted plastic plugs in the holes and painted them. Some of the paint is wearing of, thats what you see in the pictures. There are also some holes for a CB radio antenna that was removed.
The roof needs some work, very weather worn and some light rusting around the gutter.
Interior is excellent but the headliner is starting to sag. A new one was installed but not properly.
Odometer and speedometer do not work. The speedometer started acting up a few months ago and recently the needle fell off.
It is probably time to replace the rubber molding around the windows. No leaks put they are starting to crack.
It has always been a little difficult to shift into second gear. LTC4X4 stated this is a common and easily corrected problem but they did not tell me how costly.
One very minor oil leak and I'm pretty sure it's the rear main seal.
I'd be happy to answer any questions or provide close up pictures of any areas of interest. We would entertain a trade for a similar mint/stock condition 60,62 or 80. Asking price $22,000.00.
