Opinions on tire sidewall strength

It's really hard to tell from those pix, the parts where detail is needed are pink. If it's only happening in macro, try shooting from 3-4' at full zoom and cropping, or barrow a camera?

My basic rule is; as long as cords aren't cut I don't worry. What is the date code on the tires? As tires age the rubber becomes harder, making it less elastic, much easier to cut, chunk.

Kevin, the cords are not cut. I tried with another camera, but no joy - it doesn't have macro and my camera with macro is fried. The tires are just over a year old. GDTs are selling so fast, they can't keep them on the shelves, so I'm not worried about tire age - at least the new rubber.

...........Either way, those Green Diamonds are chunking rather badly.

Yeah, Gabe, I agree. I've not heard back from GDT yet. Gonna give them a week or so - Rich might be on vacation. If I don't hear back by then, I'm thinking he's ignoring me and will show the results in my GDT thread. Need to give him the benefit of the doubt, though. These tires are so nice in the winter on the passes and on packed snow & ice.
 
I wonder how they compare to the Treadwrights with their kedge grip. Seems like a similar idea. I've been happy with the :princess: BFG style Treadwrights so far.
 
Tyres are one of the biggest discussion points on forums and everyone has his or her opinion however, in my experience I have found there are so many variables that it is difficult to choose a tyre design and pressure that is answer to all our problems/situations. The issues that we all see from time to time may be caused by so many factors it makes analysis difficult or even impossible.

Tyre design/construction/manufacturing methods (QC?)/terrain/pressure/load/temperature/age/ and driving skills I could go on and on (and often do) are just some of the variables we encounter, I have found that a BFG AT's pretty much cope with anything you throw at them but get this, I tend to run a fairly hard tyre on flat stony trail i.e. very few rocks but plenty of tree stumps/roots sticking out of the ground, if the tyre pressure is low the stump digs in and with the aid of the tyre rotating 'drills' into the tyre wall and damages it, now the same test with a higher pressure does not allow the stump to dig in and in fact the tyre/car can be deflected away from it leaving less damage. Many guys (girls) here had been running Coopers or Kumho's and found a lot of issues with cuts/root damage ect and now BFG rule the roost, I am not going to say I educated them with BFG but my old Discovery with all the mods could do anything and more with a set of BFG all terrains than their cars fitted with muds and at the end of the day showing less damage, the converts were not far behind.

Still no reply from Rich. I just updated him with my new e-mail address with links to this thread and my GDT tire thread. Hopefully, I'll get some feed back. He's surfed this forum before and liked my GDT tire thread. I still have not re-installed the Green Diamonds on my 80. I want to see what his reaction to the chunking will be, first.
