I wouldnt even consider it without seeing it in person. I suspect its a rust bucket. The paint job is very low quality, so I would guess the rust repairs are the same.
There is something black oozing from the airtube join (from filter to engine) It may be nothing but it could be blowby or over revving for long periods.

This is not the last one in the universe, good things come to those that wait.

Its up to $5500, that would be my max bid.

I agree with @roscoFJ73 There is probably a whole lot more rust hiding out there. That paint job isn't very good and there is already rust coming through that. Every time I see a "fresh repaint" without ANY documentation of what was done, and there is already rust showing I would run away unless it's really cheap.
Paint chipping around windshield, rust on bottoms of doors probably means floorboards as well. Rockers and fenders are going to have way more issues than what is showing. The interior looks pretty clean.

It's hard to know how the mechanicals are without driving it.

I'd watch it, if it stays cheap I might take a flyer on it, but it appears that you might be fixing A LOT of other issues along the way.

Are you wanting just a put a rig for every so often? An expedition build rig?

rust issues are fine. In new hampshire, we're used to it. It doesnt look too too bad. I've seen WAY worse examples. I think id use it as a mix of Daily driver to and from High School, and an expedition rig during College summers.

It would probably be a pretty decent rig for that then. My guess is that it will go up to over $10K
I would try and get pictures of the rust repair if possible. That mud thread showed some damage, but not exactly how it was repaired.
Either way it might not be too rusted out and thats a great drivetrain.

I can't imagine it will for for $5k as import costs alone are $3-4K

Hello,

The auction sheet suggests it might be a rust bucket. Not enough pictures of the underside, though.

The oil oozing from the air intake duct is suspicious, to say the least.

Not enough pictures of the windshield frame and base, usual rust spots.

I would go through this truck with a very fine tooth comb before considering anything. Or I would wait for another in better shape.

Dont be surprised if its back on sale next month.

If it is then it will probably have more to do with the rhd and the automatic transmission then with a possible rust issue .

Maybe, but if you bought that thinking it has a good body you would be disappointed. I don't see why the auto would be a set back, a lot of people would find it beneficial in traffic. And they would have known upfront it was RHD and auto

In a lhd country the novelty of rhd gets old pretty fast . In all honesty all the Toyota diesel cruisers from the eighties and the nineties are way more fun to drive with a manual and in a fast paced environment like the US trafic you really feel how outdated these dinosaur auto trannies are.

I think the poor paint quality was a dead giveaway of not getting a pristine cruiser and no matter the quality of the rust repairs the driving experience stays the same.

@joekatana

Are we talking 3FE style performance with that auto?

Is this a fair comparison?
13bt/auto = 3FE auto
13bt/manual = 1FZ/auto

I haven't ever driven my 5spd/13bt yet so I'm a little curious as I've heard conflicting reports of power. I have however owned F, 2F, H, 3FE, 1FZ, 2UZ

Does no one "manually shift" their auto gearboxes?

To me it feels like you loose at least about 25% of the power , now this is just a feeling but if you look at the H55 and even the R150,H150 and H151 that we had in these cruisers available these are great transmissions with very little issues and a smooth shift pattern compared to the SM and other manual transmissions here. The auto boxes in these cruisers are not that reliable and certainly do not have a smooth shifting pattern after 20 - 30 years of use. I have driven most JDM models with an auto albeit be it for no more then a few K miles on each of them because they never stay long with me and have a few 100K experience in most of the common 7x and 8x diesels with manuals and they are day and night difference.

Neither do the manual transmissions if they are that old and havent been looked after.

While the power is down on an auto, its no where near 25%.

I've read the torque converters loses about 10-15hp when not locked up (measured on a dyno). For many of the old Toyota diesels that could be 25% of the wheel hp....LOL.
