Long time lurker here, and Toyota 4x4 owner for the last 25 years. I went to Toyota to buy a new Tacoma because of the service from my 2003 access cab with 258k miles. After driving one I found it very uncomfortable and not really a place that I wanted to spend the next 10 or so years. So I thought I would just keep the 2003 and buy a 2016 4runner limited. After driving one and liking it I made the mistake of driving a 2014 Landcruiser. As soon as I drove it I knew I had found my next vehicle, now the problem price! I am a person who pays for his vehicles upfront so the price difference is a big jump. I m no stranger to high mileage Toyota's so I thought I will just buy a used 30-40 thousand dollar one. Here is the deal I found through a friend of a friends body shop. 2009 Lx570 with all the upgrade packages $88000.00 sticker, he bought it in 2009 with 94 miles on it after it had sustained right side damage during transport. Needed a fender, both doors and rear quarter panel. No frame or inner structure damage. All new parts from Lexus and his wife has driven the vehicle for the 98000 miles. Full service history using Lexus or Lexus parts. It is one of the nicest used Landcruiser or Lx570 that I looked at. Everything works and drives the same as a 20000 miles unit that I drove. I can buy this one around $30000 which is well under budget, and about 7-10 thousand less than similar units in my area. Opinions? I'm a hands on guy and do most of my own work on my vehicles and know what to look for as far as spotty body work. Most of the others that I have looked at have had minor accident history and multiple owners. Thanks for reading! Thoughts?

If it is in within your budget and the body work is sound, I'd say go for it, with one caveat: Are you planning on doing ANY modifications? If you are, then I would hold out for a Land Cruiser and not look at any other LXs. If on the other hand, you have NO plans on any mods (other than wheels or tires), then go for it. The LX is a very nice ride, but there are no supporting modifications unless you start pulling parts off the vehicle to make it more similar to an LC. If you are going to do that, then just buy an LC instead.

Those are my thoughts. Good luck! Oh, and the LX is very fun off road too!

LC, I would say that I'm more of a stock guy than an after market guy. I ride dual sports and have a Honda Pioneer 700 sxs for offroad trips. I do 2 trips out west each year to ride my Dr650 and would like to use this truck as a toy hauler. However I was looking at the 200's in Ouray thread, which is an area that I have ridden in the past, my wife would like to see the area so whatever I buy will see some offroad.

I can understand where you are coming from. I use mine to haul our Lance 2185 camping trailer(~5300lbs loaded), as my DD, and to explore when we are out camping. With that said, I was a little disappointed that I would not be able to pull off the steps and put on sliders, which was the only mod that I was looking to do, just to be on the safe side when off road. If keeping it stock is the way you like to go, then I would definitely say that the LX is a great option. If this particular one is a color that you like, is in a reasonable shape, given its history, and you smile each time you get in, then go for it!
At first, when we purchased ours earlier this year, I was not sure that I was going to like it, but now that I have taken it off road, have towed with it multiple times, I am enjoying driving it more and more. I will even more so when I can put some snow rated ATs on it. The tires I currently have (Goodyear Eagle IIs) are just too slippery in the icy conditions that we see here at times.

Oh, and if you do make it to Ouray, I WANT PICS! ;) So, make sure that you post them up!

The bypass you speak of was a gravel laid hill. Easy

The gravel hill is easy when dry. When wet, not so much. Even wet with a little luck stock rig maybe but with high risk of rocker damage.

Thanks guys. I tried to post a picture of me on top engineer pass last summer. Must be too big, Ill play with it later. May take a trip to Alabama, there are many used LC and LX in that area with 100% southern history. I really dont like rust and prices seem a bit better.

If you need someone to look at a LC/LX in the Birmingham area, just it me know. I will happily take some pics and look it over for you.

Thanks Jk, I spoke with a gentleman yesterday from Donohoo auto. Must be a very large dealer down there, and the salesman did not know anything about the vehicle. I hope to find a private owner selling, so I can get some of the history.

If you plug the VIN into either the Lexus or Toyota Owners' website support section (depending on whether you're checking an LX or LC, you can get and print a listing of all services done at a dealer, starting with the first owner of the truck.

When I was looking, I had decided to grab whichever came up first, Land Cruiser or LX 570 (there's a lot more LX570s around here). Further research along the way, however, and I found that Lexus specs called from premium gas for the LX570 and it had a tow rating about 1500 lbs. less than the LC. Since I tow a 6500 pound travel trailer, that alone eliminated the Lexus. Plus I couldn't figure a reason why the same engine would call for different gas. Upshot: I waited a little longer and found a Toyota Certified Used 2009 LC. Love it!

My personal suspicion is that they put the "Premium Only" thing on the Lexus simply because it gives an impression of "exclusivity" to buyers who are used to buying premium automobiles...

If you look at the specs, it shows the Lexus engine making 2 more horsepower than the LC...which is less than 1% difference--a tiny change--and one which (I believe) could be accounted for by the bump in octane.

Others have wondered if the filter is different, or if the tune is different, but I seem to recall there was no evidence of it.

Personally? I always put Premium in my LC anyway...and always have.

The OTHER thing I find curious is that they do not specify the LC/LX engines as "i-Force"...whatever that is.
The only difference I know of about the Land Cruiser Engines and the Tundra 5.7 is that the Land Curiser Engines are built at Toyota's more specialized plant, while the Tundra's 5.7 is built at a normal plant.

Maybe others here have since figured this out...?

Just curious.

"i-FORCE is the name given to the Toyota Tundra's powerful V8 engine. This engine uses VVT-i, which stands for “Variable Valve Timing with intelligence” for improved fuel economy. What makes this engine different from traditional engines is that Toyota developed a way to overlap the time between when the exhaust valve closes and when the intake valve opens. This results in drastically improved fuel economy for these larger vehicles that require an 8-cylinder engine. This type of engine is standard on the Tundra, Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, FJ Cruiser, and 4Runner."

Without digging I'm going to assume the tow rating difference is a combination of overall curb weight, suspension, OEM tire differences. 20's generally don't have the same capacities as the smaller wheel tires. The auto ride suspension of whatever its called my not like the tongue weight and I bet the LX is a little heavier due to all the extra accessory crap.

Huh. So it's the same. I wonder why they don't hype the "iForce" name with the Land Cruiser. On Tundras, they stick gigantic badges on both sides and the badge bragging about "iForce"...

Thanks Willy

Funny aside... The lack of big "i-Force V8" badges does point toward a more "stealth mode" badassery in the LC that appeals to me.

The funny part...
-The other day, a noisy, modded little street-racer guy pulled up next to me at a stop light the other day.
While I'm no street racer...I did have a super fun little Subaru WRX for a time...so i was just eyeballing this guy's little car.
-He saw me Eyeballing, and I think he thought I was challenging him (haha! No...I wasn't). But when he started revving his overly-noisy little 4-banger...just for kicks, I really stepped on it when the light turned green...and... LEFT HIM IN THE DUST!!! haha!

When we got to the next stop light, he rolled down his window and said, "What did you do to that thing??"

-My reply was, "Just stepped on the gas, pedal, man. These things come like this..." :)

Twas rather funny. But Man! These 5.7's really do move this monster! It's no race car, but it sure dusted that little "racer..." :)))

Markupoop

PS. Obviously his little modded racer wasn't very fast...as the LC won't set any track records...but the LC's power does surprise the unsuspecting... :)

Funny, that one of the reasons that I want a LC. I like the power over a 4runner.
