Please check out the truck listed above. I need a truck for my lawn company here in Orlando. I think I want an old Toyota dually. Was the dually a factory option, or is it something people did. What’s your opinion of the 22RE motor? I probably will weld a ramp on the back of the truck to drive my mowers up on.

Any info on this kind of truck would be appreciated. I am not familiar with old Toyota Pickups. New to Toyota in general.

You would get more response in chat or in the Toyota (Pick up) Truck section.

A mod will probably move this for you as soon as they see it.

That said it is a Toyota...been used hard but if it has been taken care of...it would be a sweet truck.

Cool Find!

I have had many trucks and 4Runners but never a dually with a dump bed so I can't comment on those aspects but the 22RE motor and 5 speed manual tranny are strong performers. It won't be a speed demon but it will be very reliable. The main things you want to look for is the condition of the timing chain and the transmission bearings. If possible drive the vehicle or have someone drive it for you. You want to listen for a sloppy clanking sound at idle and with reving of the motor. If possible you should check the timing of the motor. The OBD I system on that truck does not need to be in a service mode. You can just hook up the light and check. The timing mark should be pretty stable at 3* BTDC. If it moves around alot the timing chain is probably loose and needs to be replaced. Listen at the front with the hood up manually reving it. The accepted norm for replacing the chain is 100k. The tranny will tell you if the bearings are going bad by driving it on the freeway at speed and in 5th gear. They will make a humming noise that is more pronounced with acceleration. 5th is the most common gear this will show up in but it may be present in other gears.

One other thing you can do or have done is short out the terminal on the USDS inner fender in the engine compartment. This terminal will be held by a rubber grommet to the fender and is a "dead end". If you short it out and turn the key to the on position, not acc, you will get a series of flashes which can be interpreted using an FSM. This will tell you if the truck has thrown a CE recently. Assuming the ECU memory has not been cleared of course.

Good Luck
