Dandon - I expect that this is just me being really dumb but how will making a hole in the sleeve stop water from getting in as opposed to actually letting it in?

ta,

Water already gets in,it is not water tight ath the ends, it is then trapped at the loop/bend when the tailgate is stored in the closed position. By putting a hole at the loop/bend, it allows moisture out, theoretically helping your cable to last longer.

Maybe your desert is different then the Arizona desert.:)

Snapped a cable about a month ago and the vehicle has been in Arizona since day 1. Surprised me also.

I just realized the difference in our deserts Phil...

It actually RAINS in Arizona...It NEVER rains here in Vegas :frown: I had to drive all the way to Utah this weekend just to get rained on !

Oh, plus I dont remember the last time I washed my rig ;)

I did however, check my cables and underneath those "protective ? " boots there was a small amount of chalky-looking corrosion, but only on the surface.
I guess I have Nothing to worry about.. YET

Have you guys thought about purchasing some Anchor marine heat shrink tubing? You could buy new cables from Dan and heat shrink each end(you use a heat gun)--in the marine enviroment they are used to keep connections from corroding.
heat shrink.webp

Dragging up an old thead. Broke both my cables this weekend. My 2 year old lifted gate 1/2 way up and dropped it. Snap they both went. Rusted inside sleve like everyone said. Don't know how many times there's been 2 adults sitting on it no problem, let a 2 year old play and it brakes. I'm just waiting for him to snap off indicator and cruise control levers.

Go to a marine rigging shop and have them install stainless cables. Even 3/16" 7x19 strand stainless cables used for sailboat halyards can withstand many thousands of pounds of force. IMHO, the weakest link will be the bolt and were it bolts into the body.

Living at 8150 ft. I'm a long way from any marine rigging shop. I do however have a toyota dealer 100 miles away that provides a meeting room for my club. OEM part is $15 per side. Guess I'll get another set in another 9 years.

Do it a little sooner than that, that way in 8 years when your 275lb buddy sits on it, it doesn't break, denting your tailgate and causing him to get a concussion.
A new tailgate: $1k
ambulance ride: $1k
ER/xrays: $2k
look on your friends face as he falls: priceless! :D:D

Maybe some WD40 once a year and keep them forever.

I sure like C-Dans Aluminum plate idea. I think I make one too, but will anodize mine so it won’t oxidize.
