One way ticket to bring home a 40...

I think 16k is ok if it is a solid rig. But I see some cheesy stuff. Cheese raises flags and usually continues to go on throughout a rig. So it's best to look at it, and bring a knowledgeable mudder and give them 50 bucks for the help. If your traveling to,see it, line up a few more rigs to look at out their while your at it so u get some options.

An FYI

The rims are split rims ... the ring is painted black... didn't notice the first time I looked

Most likely the more desirable 16" with clips ... could be 15" splits but those are a rarer to find and much much less desirable

Not to be a jerk, but let me break this down a bit...

Fair play on the replies gents. Thanks for taking the time to educate. I know everyone has better things to do than to spend their weekend giving advice to a future rig owner. There hasn't been an exchange of money yet. My flight isn't until tonight, but with these responses perhaps I will reconsider.

This is a relief to hear... just cancel the flight if you haven't yet.

As for the questions asked, there isn't a spec of rust on it. It's solid and clean under the tacky chrome trim (Which from my understanding isn't entirely uncommon on the BJ40's...there is another in CA right now with the exact same trim package on it. Granted, it looks terrible.) That said, I don't have pictures of the work that was done.

Lots of contradiction here... not a "spec of rust" and "it's solid and clean under the tacky..." and then the remark "I don't have pictures". If this was restored properly there would be pics of the process. Period.

So, I suppose it could be entirely made of bondo.

I would imagine this is gonna be the case.

There is no smoke from the engine and everything is in good shape from the pictures I've been sent so far.

At 16k I thought it was a sound deal, but maybe I'm shooting from the hip and being overly optimistic. Arsebiscuits...

As others have said, for $16K it was not restored the way it appears or he wants you to believe. No way. I know the developing country prices for a restoration and that price is for a lipsticked-pig.

First off, thanks for all the the sound advice here and via PM's. I took none of it as insulting or negative and read all of it in a constructive helpful light. At the end of the day, we're talking rigs, not if the new jeans make the Mrs. look hefty. So no need for tact on my account. I'll take it straight!

So I didn't end up flying down. The owner is on the road for the next few weeks and the 40 is being kept with his father. I'm hoping to have a local mudder at least put a set of objective eyes on her and take some good pictures.

I was basing my assessment of "no rust" on the long conversation that I had with the owner. I know intuition and taking someones word means little these days (sadly), but I genuinely feel the seller is an honest guy and not out to stick it to anyone intentionally (intentional obviously being the key word here).

I should add that I'm not after a perfect rig here. I really like the BJ40's, and for my purposes, it will suit me as my daily driver and occasional off road rig for mountain biking/camping trips. I'm also not looking for a rig that will need to be parked and worked on for months on end just to get road worthy. I realize the pride that comes from building (or re-building) something from the ground up, but I've enjoyed that with motorcycles for years now and I'd really enjoy the 40 to be closer to turn key.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. If anyone is near Lake Wales, FL, I'd be more than willing to cover your fuel costs and whatever time is involved to make it worth your while to have a look and take some good pictures. I don't mean that to be a slap in the face of anyone here who is suggesting I run for the hills. But it couldn't hurt to have some all-telling pictures to further assess how bad (or good) she may be. Thanks again!

Great call... it never hurts to look harder. If it is a pretty decent rig you can catalog any observable defects and offer a lower price.

I'm in FL, but I'm probably 2.5 hours away from Lake Wales. I suggest you make a post in the FL Clubhouse section, I'm certain there are members in there much closer who would be willing to take a look.

Waiting to hear! You can fix all the ugly on that rig, rust is the dealbreaker!

Agreed! And bondo...

Many thanks for the offer!

Good read John. Thanks for that.

So here are some more pictures. A fellow Mudder has extended an offer to go check her out in person, but before I potentially waste his time (which I don't want to do and would still compensate him obviously), does anyone see any big areas of concern? I'm not quite sure about the neon green tubes and the chunky material at the rear where the tub meets the top (on the seam near the doors)..

Compared to most of what I see advertised at any price that rig looks pretty good.

That said I would NEVER commit to buying something without inspecting it in person.
The stuff you need to see will not show up in a photo.
The reverse side of the rockers & rear sill, paint over grease, etc.

Paint on the roof gasket just means that it was painted with the top on.
If the seller is suggesting it was a frame off restoration, that would be hard to do with the top on.

It does look like someone has done a lot of good work and hasn't done a quick paint job to sell it.
Looking at the door & hood hardware & gaskets and the engine compartment, everything looks like it was removed and put on after paint.

I suggest placing zero value on any seller's story and determine the value based only on what you can see and prove.

Also suggest making a checklist before you go to see it.
It is very easy to miss something obvious without a list.

Looks decent, but paint can hide a lot. Great that you can find a third party to check it out. It looks worthy of a deeper look. It does look like they went to the Costa Rica version of Autozone and threw a bunch of crap at it.

The issue, for me, is that 'restorations' cost a lot of time and money, and $16k is no way enough money to take that truck all apart, fix the problems CORRECTLY, and put it back together.

So either it was in great shape before, or corners were cut.

Are you dead set on a diesel?

With that much work why did they electrical tape the steering column clam shell? That is a sign to me of many short cuts you will find

Top advice yet again. I can't thank you all enough for the input. A fellow mudder will hopefully be checking her out this week. In the meantime, the seller sent these over today. Sorry to drag the thread out, but I'd be fibbing if I said I wasn't hoping for a happy ending here (not that kind...sicko's).
