My desmogged '79 FJ40 runs but was feeling like I had dropped an anchor. I only drive it about 10 miles to work but on one stretch it was hard to get up to 50 mph. A friend following me said it smelled a little rich. I cleaned the plugs and then went to check the timing but the #1 wire wouldn't trigger the timing light. Checking the other wires I found that the #4 was the same. I pulled the dist cap and found two carbon tracks. The truck had been running on 4 of the 6 cylinders and was only having trouble at the higher speeds.

One tough engine.

Nice. When my F engine died it lost oil pressure on the way to town. It started knocking really badly but I figured it was already wrecked and I might as well try to finish my shopping trip. 10 miles into town. Drove around town for an hour or so. Drove 10 miles home... all with no oil pressure. The motor was making some pretty aweful sounds and smoking like crazy and couldn't go more then about 30mph... but it drove me home.

Toyota did something very right with these trucks.
