A few weeks ago, I came out to find a business card on my front windscreen. The note read: Blah blah blah, used to own your 80, still love it, wife made me sell it. Said he had some extras in the shed and to call if I wanted them, I called and wanted them but he wanted ridiculous prices for it so I didn't buy any. He also said that he has ONE front disc rotor because he only replaced one.. That would explain why one looks good and one is worn. It's almost like theres a big circular scratych where the top of the pad sits (could be beginning to break through the rotor..!) and it's rough and looks to be thinner where the pad sits than the outer edges from what I can see without removing the wheel so far.

Just for a lught (this hs nothing to do with the topic but you'll like this) I asked, did anything ever go wrong for you? It had an oil leak and burns alot too. He says.. Ahhhh.. No Never! :D Nothing ever went wrong with it apparently.. Anyhow, on with the story

Just replace them both with these you reckon, or is just the one ok?

I've never replaced these before, pulled wheels off but never got as far as the rotors. I see that there are slotted types available, and I know they work very well because I had some on my old car and changed them to standard becasue I was replacing pads once a year. Or will just one new one be okay>? The other side looks really good and is about 3 years old. I don't know what I'm doing!! :o I guess alls I need to know is can I just replace the one rotor, both, and or both brake pads too.

Thanks guys

I'd replace both, they aren't that expensive and you'll know they're good.

same issue

I picked up my 97 a few months ago. It has the same issue. No braking problems but the driver's side front rotor looks awful. I went ahead and picked up two rotors from Cruiserdan, along with a front axle rebuild kit. Hope to knock it all out one weekend soon...

Yea, mine's drivers side too.. There must be something about that one becasue when I checked my pads and disc (assuming both were the same condition) I pulled the passenger side wheel off.

If it has a history of uneven rotor and brake pad wear I would at least replace the seals in the brake calipers.

I would replace both rotors with Toy units, 100 series brake pads and rebuild the calipers with new pistons and seals, use DOT 4 brake fluid and be done with it. CDan can ship those parts out in a jiffy.
Replacing just one rotor is a false economy, you really want to have even braking, and the Toy rotors are good quality....FWIW.

Cheers,
Gord

Thanks fellas.

I will replace both and can get them locally for a pretty good price. I don't believe the truck has any signs of uneven wear, it's just the previous owner got lazy and only put one rotor in.. So the other one is toast. The truck brakes pretty good for the look of the bad one, and it doesn't pull to one side or anything, you'd never know one looks bad and it feels okay so I really look forward to the new install and improved braking!

I also pulled the ABS fuse because of intermittent ABS when there shouldn't have been. Been waiting for the chance to clean the sensors and this is it (I dare say it would be front sensors cause they dust up more I'm guessing)

Just some questions for you all

1. Do the 100 series pads fit straight in to the 80 break calipers?

2. I've never done a caliper rebuild and don't really want to bleed the brakes again (did that a year ago) I don't believe theres any probs with them, should I just spray them with brake cleaner? Or leave them alone?

I replaced both on mine the weekend I got it, the pass side caliper was jammed and wasn't compressing at all, and the drivers rotor was warn almost all the way through! I found new calipers from napa for $75 so I replaced both. I found rotors online for $100 a set. My opinion is whatever you do to one side of the system you should do to the other.
