Last weekend i was changing the diff fluid in the 80. Drained the rear, removed the fill plug, and then just to see if the bottle would tip enough to get all the oil out of the bottle and into the diff without hitting something (like on the front diff) the damn cone shaped cap popped off and went right into the rear diff.  . Just my luck. Well, i decided that the gears in there would easily destroy the small plastic cap and i would just drain the oil out, again, and refill, again, except without the cap on for testing this time.

I think i'm o.k. with it. Haven't heard any noices or felt anything strange. You guys think it's o.k.?

I doubt it will do anything. There are bits of metal floating around in there from manufacture and they are lots harder than a plastic cap.

Can't you just pull the cover off of the rear of the diff to gain access?

Don't you just hate s___ like that?

I think it will be fine.

I can't believe you did this!!! :D I did the EXACT same thing when changing my Taco's rear diff to synthetic!! I was test fitting the bottle and the cone cap came off in the diff  You should -- well maybe not -- have heard the cussing going on after that royal screw up! :censor:

But!! All was well as I had a 5 gallon bucket of dino 90w to flush it out with. It only took about two squirts from the bucket for the cap to flow right out into the pan. THANK GOD.

That was a close one... We all make stupid mistakes. I got lucky this time. :D I also found my little bottle/hose adapter thingy and used it to put the synthetic in. No more chances with the cone caps....

Jody.

Dang Jody, i thought i was the only one who could do something like that. I haven't flushed mine out yet. Didn't want to waste new syn Mobil 1 gear oil. I made a few new curse words too.

Not on a FF.

just drain the thing in a clean pan so you can reuse the synth, and then squirt more oil in until it comes out...
Or try the recovery pincher tool?
E

dont worry about it
my 40 has a plastic tube you put on carb and brake cleaner cans in the diff
The wifes 80 had the magnet from the drain plug floating around in the front diff for at least 20k miles since the Stealer I got it from changed all the fluids and put the fill and drain plug in the wrong holes and the carrer knocked the magnet out .
I only found half of it (worn )when I pulled the 3rd while doing the diff pudding/ birf job :D

I remember once on one of our old Mercedes I dropped not the cap but the retaining ring round the cap of an oil bottle through the top hole in the valve cover while I was filling the engine with oil!!! It was one of those slow motion fawkups that you watch with helpless worry. I ended up taking off the valve cover. I simply could not stand the thought of that thing grinding up in the valvetrain!!! These are the humbling hopefully harmless things that make my foot fly forcefully backwards into my own ass!!! Join the crowd!!!

On second thought, you will prolly chip about 6 teeth off of the ring gear.....

You better call me RIGHT NOW and buy a bunch of parts so you can pull it down and get that FOUL piece of devil plastic out of there.......:D

alright dan, i'm allready ordering Camary parts from you. Are your dogs still hungry? I'll get some hoses, belts and a couple other things from you when i place the brake order for the car.
