I am looking to find some more information on how to install a kilby Onboard Air kit on my 1974 FJ40. I hope someone has pics. Any help would be great, thanks. Stephen

what exactly do you need help with? I did OBA on my old chevy blazer, didn't use a kit but pieced together parts myself.

I would love to do that, but I can buy a Kilby kit for $300.00 shipped. I think that is a good deal. I have the compressor
and the Mounting Bracket. I have never had onboard air but I would love to have it on my FJ40. How much did you spend when did your kit?

I didn't spend anything close to $300

$10 york compressor
$50 for a SBC bracket (could have easily made myself)
$30 for the pressure switch that operates the clutch
$Free check valve and misc fittings from my work
$10 for york to NPT conversion fittings
$10 for a used air tank

Still have the whole setup which will be going on the fj40 eventually.

The whole system is VERY simple and should be easy to figure out, the hardest part is mounting the york.

It didn't come with Instructions?

I have not bought the kit just yet. I would like to know what I could build one for. Here are a few pics of befor the rebuild, it shows the compressor and the Mounting Bracket.

All you really need then is:

Some sort of fitting to connect to the in and out of your york - This depends on the style of york you have and I dont think the kit you're looking at comes with these. This is probably the only thing I would buy from kilby($45), I think for your york you need rotolock fittings. I got lucky with mine off a volvo, no rotolock so I was able to find the right fittings from Fittings Inc.

A tank - whatever you can find
A pressure shut off switch $10-40
A safety relief valve $5
A check valve - $10

And various gauges, switches and fittings according to how and where you want to set it up.

Google York On Board Air, tons of people have done this without going through Kilby (which is very expensive) and have done write ups on them. For heeps mostly, and blazers and lots of other vehicles. The only thing that is FJ40 specific you've already got taken care of.

Where did you get your York compressor? Unless it has been modified it will throw oil into your air lines, which is bad for the inside of your tires. There is a mod in the tech section to prevent it from doing this, but I found it easier to install a air compressor oil filter right after my York. Once it fills with oil I have a valve and tubing that run back to my compressor.

I did the mod on my york, it doesn't eliminate the blow-by completely. it's fine for air tools and tires, but if I was using it as an air supply for an ARB I would definately get a filter.

Its going to be for air tools, tires. I only use the Best in Lockers thats why I use Detroit Lockers.

Ooops! There goes that State department job......................:flipoff2:

What does Ooops! There goes that State department job...................... mean?

"The best in lockers..." is an opinion, my man. Opinions are just that and one is no more important than another. Diplomacy is a requirement for a State Department job. :D

So if oneone has power steering and the alternator is on the passenger side, wherfe would the york mount? Anyone have a bracket for installing the York next to the alternator?

Thanks!
