Im running an oldschool StreetPilot I (Black/White screen) and I was thinking of using a laptop to run Topo National Geographic for California.

Does the TOPO mapping software run realtime along with the GPS - ie plots where you are on the map (ON the LAPTOP not GPS unit) while offroad?

Ditto...the NG is great. I have DeLorme 5.0/6.0, Garmin Mapsource and the NG...the NG is my favorite for general off-road remote navigation. The only nit is while navigating if you want to scroll around the map, with NG, you need to stop GPS nav by de-selecting "keep map centered on vehicle" (or something similar...this tip came to me via Scott Brady).

Thanks for the replies.

I looked at the Earthmate GPS BT-20 Deluxe - BUNDLE by Delorme and pretty much something I would get if I wanted to start over with a new laptop.

But for now it looks like Ill be getting the NG Topo! with a majority of good reviews Ive read.

you are aware that the NG topo stuff is not IIRC the high resolution stuff (except for a few specific issues like the National Parks etc...)?

added: comment above appears to be incorrect per below...

1:24,000...any larger than that and you'll need a big screen to see anything ;).

OK, I'm wrong then. Maybe I'm confusing this with the Topo by Garmin? Should have checked before writing.... sorry!

Garmin MapSource is 1:100,000...except as you stated their National Parks are 1:24,000.

I use OziExplorer.

I have Hema maps and Auslig Raster maps loaded. All of Australia on my laptop.

I also have UBD maps for most Aussie towns on the lap top as well.

Just got to get the UBDs to work on the OziExplorer so I have realtime mapping while navigating the city streets as well.
