Got mine today.

Anyone have any good frequencies to listen to?

I recently found 146.940 (W7EX), a repeater in White Tank Mountain regional park. I've been able to make contact pretty much every day, all over the valley including far east Shea Blvd just shy of Fountain Hills. Pretty active place.

OK - I bought a Ham hand-held radio. Got a Yaesu FT-252. Been studing for the the test and wondering who is available in CSC to give the test and when do they do so? Not ready yet but looking for info. Also, like all newbies I have a lot of questions. Is there someone I can talk to who wouldn't mind answering a few dumb question?

You need to register for a test with a local group. Go to the link below to find a time and location.

What dumb questions ya got?

Going to take the exam in south Phoenix on the 8th. (I think) And about all those questions, I've decided it's best not to muddle the mind with facts when I'm trying to memorize the question bank. I'll corner someone later and ask away. Thanks

Well I took my exam last night. Passed with flying colors. Now I need to learn two more minor things before I can make use of my new ham radio -- what can I do with the radio and how the h*** can I do it?? :( No call sign yet so can't start chatting until Monday or Tuesday. One question however. What band do most of the CSC's use? 2 meter or 70cm? Without know what I was buying I bought 2 meter only Yaesu. Great radio but did I blow it by now only having a 2 meter radio. If so -- it's on Craiglist and I'll buy another. Hope to be talking with someone early next week.

First congrats! I did the exact same thing with my Yaesu and got the 252 2-meter and realized later I missed the dual band with the 70cm. To be honest the dozen or so times Ive been out with a group the 2 meter is the only thing ever used and the main channel it seems is 146.46.

Iirc, you can still phone patch with 2meter so not sure why I would need anymore than that for my personal usage.

Get ready for some crystal clear, long range communication. Your CB will start gathering dust quickly...

Thanks for the info. Really didn't want to sell my brand new radio. I'm just now starting to figure out how the darn thing works. A lot more to learn however. Maybe someday I'll get into 70cm. I was out with TRAL a couple of week ago and most of them still running CBs. ??? Maybe I'll start something new.

Can't wait to find my call sign on the FCC web site.

Joined the HAM club today. Passed my exam via AARL at the South Mountain Community College library.

I listened to the videos on http://www.hamwhisperer.com while I drove to work/home for a period of 2-3 weeks and used Ham Tech app for iPhone for practice tests and skills assessment.

Great way to go and appreciative for "Andy" from Ham Whisperer who made all those videos. What a great way to utilize the wasted drive time.

You may be able to get one of the Christmas ham give away radios. Check with LCP
