every time i see this post it kills me to think about what the previous owner paid to have all that rust cut out and patched. obviously not the case.

why are there no trout as distractions?

Because statistically, trout were a minor threat to cruiser time!

I spent five days in Montana under very difficult water conditions. The numbers were down but the size was up...I caught my biggest trout ever in a river that my 4 year old could have waded across. oh yes! but no pictures! oh well. but here is a picture from very near there in the midst of a very nice hatch.

otherwise fishing has been a couple of times on the Charles (tough water this year, too, very high) and a nice beat of inshore fishing with a guide on the coast of GA...caught my biggest fish ever, a blacktip shark around 47 inches.

Dave... I spent a few days in Yellowstone this year. Gorgeous, much fish? Maybe but with the million other anglers there it was really about hanging out and fishing gorgeous rivers with bears and buffalo in the background. very cool.

then we headed down to ennis where the damn dam was broken! there was gate stuck UP so the river was ridiculously high. we didnt even fish it. instead we drove down to alder and hit the ruby for a day, which was nice. lots of fish but very small. we did not stop there! we then went for 3 days on the snake. huge river, very deep, lots of drifting and casting to the banks. a good time had by all but my big buck brown still eludes me! just lots o little ones but its still fun.

major progress

I will try to rescue this thread from the depths of potty talk. I stared at Olive last week and realized that I was done screwing around and was ready to make some major progress. So I mudded around the floor patch, finished the putty work and sand prep and got the beast into primer.

I didn't document everything, so you have to believe me that some more putty ensued, lots of sanding and some cussing...then a little more putty and sanding and things starting looking better.

So the tower paint came out and the respirator went on. Here is the result...and I have graphically documented the one and only run!

Thanks, Nick. It is coming together well. Except for the color match. I knew it would be off, and so I didn't worry about it much and just started masking....but I was suprised by how much it was off. Overall, the color is much browner, and the driver side tub is particularly dark. But the cans must have been uneven, as the passenger side tub color is more golden brown! WTF? Not very good mixing I guess...

So I have a rather compelling two-tone scheme going on, and will stick with that until I get more cans and figure out how to get even color between them.

One thing I learned about Tower paint is you need to shake it for a long time.

Wow, those pictures above look very bad...I promise that that is pixilation and the paint (old and new) is not that screwed up. I posted pics that were about 200 kb but they appear as about 1/10th that size on the post.

You should buy cans from KWIK Auto in Stoughton or Medford. That's where I started getting my rattlers from and the paint is better and the spray nozzles work much better. Plus you don't have to wait or pay shipping.

Either way you definitely have to repaint the whole thing. Once they mix a new batch it won't exactly match what you've already painted with. Always order more than you'll need for after you go wheeling or when you drop your bike into it.

Looks like oem Brolive. Seems odd that the color is that far off and the difference between both quarter panels is significant. Might be worth asking Tower what the deal is and maybe getting a price break on your next order.

after seeing that I will never use can spray paint. seriously it is not that much more (less since ou normally don't have to redo your work) to get a gallon of paint from ppg and a spray gun from eastwood.com I think I got at set for $100 or $150 and spray it right. I also think the darker a color is the harder it is guna be to match even from the top of the can to the bottom you are going to have color variation there is simply no way you can avoid that with spray cans. also the the temperature makes a huge difference not sure what the spray cans are set up for temp wise but that can gell the paint and prevent it from mixing right. i keep my paint in the basement near the furnace (not too close but int he area where thye stay at 58 degrees all year round. makes a differnece in color matching. the white/ cream it isn't as important in that it is a light color but the river blue I am using is always the same color every time i spray it.
you would be pleasently surprised at how easy and nice a spray gun lays down paint. you could eaily paint a fj40 in a week end then sand it out and have a nice finish that you can easily buff out futrue scratches or atleat have the piece of mind that if you need to repaint an area it will match.
the body work looks really good though

In response to Foggy- you have to paint the entire truck at one time with rattlers. custom mixed paint is made in one batch then put in X number of cans. Since the batch is all the same color , the color in each can will lay down the same tone. It's when you go back and buy another can or two with a new paint batch that it doesn't match up.

I agree with Jason and obviously a spray gun is best. I don't have the option of using on in my garage.
