So what happened to the old wheel?
High flange hubs and steel frame eh? You must be a retro grouch like me.

Bump for updates...c'mon ND.

Well said. I have done a couple of things, but have been behind on the photos. A fair bit of time was spent with the grinder and flap wheel and such that you are just going to have to imagine. But the ps qp side cleaned up nice, again every part of "side 2" going better than the trial run on side 1.

So then I got my first chance to do any body filler work, and it was interesting. I am generally pretty weak at plaster and joint compound and all things that set as you go, but it worked out ok. Here are a couple of shots after two coats and a fair bit of sanding. You can see in the last shot that the lines came out well.

And then there was a lot more sanding and hand work, but I didn't go nuts. I was eager to get it into primer asap so I could keep things moving and see how it was going to come out, figuring that I could always do more body work if I needed to. There was one little problem with the paint on some of the old bondo, but I was able to recover ok. I used a high-fill primer but didn't really like it, so I went to regular automotive primer later. In then end, I am real happy with it, its better than I would have guessed.

The fender was probably the best surprise of all. It was pretty rough after the welding, but it shaped up very well with the mud and sanding.
The wheelwells cleaned up nicely, too.

40 last seen barricaded behind a dumpster.

Jason

Close....Dave buried the 40 nose-down in his front yard and put the virgin Mary inside the rear tub. Making a manger scene for the holidays

it will be the first 40 on a half shell

Dear friends-of-olive,

Rumors about art installations, virgins on the half-tub and other sad fates of olive are only that--rumors!

I find two distinct questions in your furtive posts:

--why are there no updates?
--what is going on with the truck?

So, to the first, be assured that the lack of updates is not because I am working on top-secret black-ops projects that can only be revealed at the end...there are no updates because of everything else getting in the way (sometime my choice, sometimes the choice of others). The primary reasons are shown below.

The first is best described as "my stupid job" which takes me overseas a lot...'nuf said.

The other two pics show my biggest distraction, and the previous wheelbuilding part of this thread is now shown in place on the final built-up fixie, evil twin to my road bike, and the sexiest, though perhaps cruelest mistress a guy can have.

Secondary answers to primary question

And to round out my first answer:

total porch rebuild (inc all new columns, rails, stair railings, substructure, skirt, paint....)
associated rear door railing

Update on Olive

So, what has actually happened on the truck?

As R mentioned, we pulled the hardtop and found part of it and the tub lip to be in great shape...and finally you can appreciate the lovely cage on this truck.

There was one last really bad spot on the outer tub, this was just below the gas filler. It has been cut out (scary), patched, finish welded, ground and one coat of mud applied.

Also, there was one really really really bad spot on the tub floor, it looked just like pile of dog-doo under the tub liner. It has been cut out, a bottom and side patch added, lots of medieval welding applied, then abundant mud to fill. This will be cleaned up with the final goal of having a not-too-anally disguised patch that will be covered in tub liner in the end.

The qps are pretty well cleaned up now, I even have the d.s. masked to put on some primer to help me decide if I need more putty...otherwise, putty will go on the places I know I need it and then I will move on.

This will leave the exhaust as the most pressing issue...that alone represents progress, given the original state of the tub when i got the truck.

More soon...wrenching season is here.

I had a really nice pumpkin colored 40 that I sold last year. You could've grabbed that up and saved some work.....

every time i see this post it kills me to think about what the previous owner paid to have all that rust cut out and patched. obviously not the case.

why are there no trout as distractions?

Here's one to start distracting you!
Taken near Keene, The guy is a fisheries biologist
with NH fish and game. It measured 40 1/2 "
the scale they had only went to 30 lbs and this
Trout was well over. It was caught in a net during
a survey they did in OCT.
