OK, so what's with tires rubbing, come to think of it?

we are all talking here about tires rubbing when they are too big. But what does this really mean? Don't imagine it's hurting the tire much. Nor is just the "rubbing" part damaging the fender much I would guess. So what? Is there a chance to actually bend some metal if the "hitting" is too harsh? How likely is this with tires that are only marginally too big and not used in Moab type terrain?
thoughts?

Rubbing away anything acting as a rust barrier could be a problem. I can only assume it could effect handling if they were to rub in some type of emergency manuever situation. Snagging a piece of metal from the truck and blowing a tire out could be a worry. Not being able to drive over a curb without the tire rubbing would make the truck seem a bit shiela. Those are all possible on-road situations. Off-road, the negatives are pretty obvious....

Picture big 'ole knobbies fully stuffed in your wheel well at full lock rubbing on your fender flare. Things can get bent up and ripped off in a hurry.

well, I'm not talking about putting on dozer tires, of course. I'm referring to the discussions about how a marginally big tire (say a 295/75 on a stock 80, for example) might possibly rub if you are doing gnarly stuff and need full articulation...

So am I.

I've seen "marginal rubbing" damage stock front bumpers. If they rub often enough on the valance I've seen the bumper actually get dented/pulled down from this rubbing.

As for when it's stuff and and starts rubbing, I think you could end up with quite a bit of damage. Alot more than just a little dent on the front bumper.

I have seen bad sides badly damaged by heavy "rubbing" if you cannot find anybody that has run this size and you really want to give it a try just try them, if they rub you can lower the bump stops, reduces articulation but you say you are not worried about that anyway?

Slap on some 315s (35") you :flipoff2: pansy and then modify accordenly. What are we going to post this :flipoff2: this to death like so many others? Drop the rear bumpstops by 2" (not those bull**** inside spring cushions) and order some FJ60 front bumpstops and wait for my further instructions. In the mean time order and install some 4.88s and the superlift truespeed.

wow, 3 lap dances and he's turning into a real man already... :D

good for him!

but seriously...
I was just curious about what sort of damage can result from marginal rubbing.
Didn't realize the bumpers would fall off...

Eric,
You can mess up the truck pretty badly,
imagine panic stop braking with some turning to avoid something you will be amazed at how much you can compress the front suspension if you try. I have seen some pretty messed up heep cherokees with oversized tires. one tore off the fender. granted this was extreme but if you are worried about the rubbing lower your bump stops. hate to say it but rick is right.... even after the lap dances.
