I have a 2000 LC. It has 201k showing on the odo. I have owned it since 100k. Been running 33s for the last 100k so probably more like 215k.

I get an oil smell at start up. Old school car oil smell.

I think it might be the valve guides by doing the search on mud. Is there an oil additive that could help with this and is anyone using an oil additive?

Also, it could be the Valve Cover gaskets. I will check those at lunch today.

Insights and thoughts and suggestions appreciated as usual.

Thank you in advance.

This a great question that I do not know the answer to. That is sad I know however the mechanics have never mentioned it being low. Even at the local gas station where they check it everytime I pull in for gas. I will start keeping an eye on it at the next change.

Is it using much oil between changes?

That will tell you what you need to know. If you're not losing oil....... Did you change the oil recently (or have it changed)? A little spilled oil may be burning. How about driveshaft just being lubed? Grease slung onto the cats will stink it up too.

Of the bolts I could see.

I got to 5 on the passenger side, all lose. 4 on the bottom, 1 on the front of the engine. All snug now.

I got to 8 on the driver side, all lose. 4 on top, 1 on front and 3 on bottom. All snug now.

I need to buy a small torque wrench and some lock tite.

My valve covers leak too. I tighten the bolts up about once a year or when I start smelling the oil burning on the exhaust.

The FSM torque values are for dry bolts in dry holes. Using Loctite when tightening the bolts makes it hard to get the right torque. The secret is GREEN Loctite. Its a wicking formula that is used after the fastners are correctly torqued. It wicks down the thread and sets up to about the same grip as Blue Loctite. Can't live without it :-)
