Okay- I changed the oil last night - big deal I know! But here is a newbe scenerio I can't seem to understand.

I used the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 I bought from the stealer - sorry cdan. I filled the 80 with 7 quarts and a little less than a half of another of M1 syn 10w-30.

When I filled her up, she was cold and came to oil came to the top of the full on the dipstick-

I drove around the block like I usually do - came back to the house and checked the oil and the dipstick level was at low? To make a long story short, I checked it again in the morning cold - and the oil level was at full. I drove around until warm, checked it again and it was at half.

Anyways, what would cause this to happen and is there something wrong with anything that I need to be aware of before I drive at all?

I drive a 1995 - 139K miles - last oil change was somewhere around 135K and I had no issues like this before -

Thank you all in advance -

Derek

I don't use the D3 filter, I had some problems with it, the filter that is called for is a toyota p/n 15600-41010. I fill with 8 quarts of oil and have no problems. The D3 filter is alot smaller filter than the 41010 .

yeah, it is way small, but that is what they gave me at the Toyota shop yesterday, so I assumed it was correct.

I will have to get the larger 41010 - thanks-

Derek, there is no need to be overly concerned, you know for certain that you put the correct amount of oil back in when you changed it so it's fine..

I can't say with any certainty why you are seeing fluctuations on your dipstick ..but here are a few suggestions. If you check your oil level immediately after shutting off the engine... then some amount of oil has not had time to "drain back" to the crankcase.

New oil can be a little tricky to see on the dipstick to begin with and if you have checked the level several times you probably have oil up and down the dipstick tube which can give a false reading in itself.

Check your level in the morning (or 30 min. after you shut down the engine) and go with that. Make sure you push the dipstick all the way down the tube each time you check it.

THE D3 is the filter most dealers sell, and tell you that it is the cruiser/tundra/sequoia filter. It is the Landcruiser filter for the V8. Its the one that they put on most cruisers here unless someone requests the "cruiser" filter. The D3 is about half the cost.

I just changed the oil on my rig again last weekend. It does take time for the oil to settle in the pan and fully "register" on the dip stick. As mentioned, the best time to check is in the morning.

I have seen it register "full" in the morning, then drive it, then stop for gas, wait five minutes, check it and it reads about a 1/4 above the low mark. Did I loose oil; no. Next morning, check it again; full.

I don't think this has anything to do with your filter. I use the WIX filters and have the same issue. Just be sure to wait a while between running and checking.

YMMV

Thanks flintknapper, cpjones1231, and super90 for your comments and for bringing peace to my mind!

It is just wierd because it really hasn't taken this long for the oil to register "full" on the dipstick after I shut down. Will check oil as per your schedule.

I took a 45 minute drive this morning and monitored the oil pressure and temp and there was nothing unusual about the fluxuations during the drive - so ok there.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Like landtank said the difference is the volume of the filter, the owner’s manual specifies checking the oil shortly after shut down so you are just over half a quart low (no big deal, but best to start out the OCI at full) . Your other reading is a false high.

I check mine every time I fill up, I pop both the hood and fuel door at the same time, after getting the fuel nozzle in and started I check the oil, coolant overflow bottle, brake fluid and power steering fluid, to check the AFT I have to remember to check it before shutting down so it does not get checked as often as I would like.

Thanks again for the input-

I know there will be a small difference in the level of oil right after you shut the engine off - for the various reasons stated above.

In my situation, the level of oil on the dipstick is down to the Low, 5 minutes after shutdown. I have never had this happen before this dramitacally, but I know I pored 7.4 quarts of oil in with no leaks. So I will just be baffled by this and know I will be okay unless someone else thinks there could be another problem lurking elsewhere.

Thanks again - this board rocks!
