I have a 87 fj60 that I just bought and the oil gage is not working I can put the lead to the ground on the sensor and the gage will peg the needle, I purchased a new sensor but have same trouble. The engine has less than 10k on a rebuild. I am not a mechanic but do have tools and a manual, any thoughts.

ummm, with sensor removed, 'start' engine- shutdown as soon as it catches: see if oil gushing (gushed) out of sensor hole.
Verifies you have some oil flow . . .

There is a difference between the ground and the spade. If you attach the lead to the spade you will short out your oil gage very quickly. The ground is right in the center of the sending unit and not the spade. I have done the same thing and you probably need to replace your oil gauge, especially if you have replaced all of the other parts. Good luck

My best bet .. use a mechanical gauge to know the exact oil press in your engine.

62 PSI aprox @ 2000 rpm the range 38 - 85 PSI

At idle no less than 8 PSI ( minimal press )

why not buy and install an aftermarket mechanical gauge? i installed one in my truck and feel a lot better with the reliable reading coming from it. took about 2 hours to install and it's good piece of mind.

otherwise, sounds like you'll need a new OEM factory gauge to replace the fried one you have.

hey just dealt with the same thing, but my wiring shorted out and burnt out the oil gauge. new mechanical one was cheap($18) and fairly easy to install. however i am little worried if the hose wore through at the firewall or broke that it would start spraying oil all over the interior of my bj60.

Yikes! Yeah I wouldn't want an oil line coming into the cabin if I could help it. I would rather have an aftermarket sender and electric gauge in the cabin.

Will let you know what I find out, I do agree I would not want an oil line in the cab, although if it works for some, than it works. I really like the thing. Long story short, I have been looking for one for some time and was not looking locally as you don’t see many fj60’s in St.Petersburg Fl. Was looking on EBay and Auto Trader, when a friend of mine who knew that I was looking for one (who if very knowlogable on the Cruiser’s) sent me an Email that there was local, went and looked at it drove it, and made offer of $4,600.00 and she said ok. After going to pick it up she asked would you like the paper work on it, of course I said yes, it has 203K on the Cruiser and less than 10K on the engine as over 8K in receipts, $5,081.00 on the rebuild of the F2. It is not by anyway perfect but It is in very good shape, has a paint job but from what I understand the prep wasn’t very well. I guess I got lucky.

Just hit up your local part's store and buy a mechanical, I have both working now. The main reason I got the second gauge was just for re-assurance. Good luck
