Hi Guys,

Happy New Year to all.

What is the best position for the oil pressure needle? half way 1/4?

Especially after a fresh oil change and driving to get to normal engine temperature for about 30 mins, where should the oil pressure needle should be reading?

Thanks!!!

Mine was reading a bit low at 1/4 couple of days back when I was driving at 60-70mph normal engine temp.

I have never seen mine at 3/4? even at 100mph?

I use SHell Rotella 5W-40 and mine is right at the 3/4 mark hot or cold, I use Purolator PureOne oil filters.
Believe it or not oil filters actually effect oil pressure.
A cheap oil filter may lower your oil pressure.

This was super common when I was in the Land Rover community. Flickering oil pressure light at hot idle, change oil filter to a better one, and no more oil pressure warning light.

Where did you get your oil changed? What oil filter did you use?
That may not be the issue, just throwing it out there.

I use 5w 30 but on my way to zero... as it is mostly... o° where I live. My needle is always low and never really fluctuates I wonder if its working.

No, not unless it puts your oil level below minimum

Ok - i think on my last oil change when i took off skid plate i noticed that probably there is a leak in crankshaft seal as very light oil drops were coming out all the way down and back of the engine underneath. I am planning to fix that and see if this changes anything.

My driving is not too much and once a year oil change - have not seen oil level low anytime so far.

My concern was if the low oil pressure might create issues in terms of getting the oil where it is supposed to go while running which is to lubricate cylinder wall etc. properly.

We just picked up an 03 LC with 257k miles on it. Oil pressure when hot at idle is below the 1/4 mark, but no warning lights and it sounds and runs fine. I was doing some research and found a tundra forum and someone there posted a pic of a service manual that stated hot oil pressure can go all the way down to like 5 psi and it was acceptable.

I have no clue what the dealership put in it for oil, I'm sure they use only the best ;) but I'm pretty sure it's the right grade (5w-30).

The Rotella comment by Spike555 has me wondering - any side affects from running a higher viscosity oil in these engines?

I also have a 2006 and have never seen the oil pressure gauge go past 1/4 over my three years of owning it. I use Toyota filters and Mobil One 5w30.

To add to this thread, I use Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic and Mobil 1 filter on my 06 and the oil pressure gauge is typically between 1/4 and 1/2, and as someone else mentioned, it increases a bit at higher rpm's. My 80 series (IIRC) was similar.

I pick up my oil filter from the toyota dealership brand new - is this good enough?

Personally I do not like OEM oil filters, they are made by the lowest bidder typically.
I have no idea who makes the Toyota oil filter.

On downhill I once was at a bit higher speed so i moved from D-4 and after slight braking i moved the gear to 3.
After some downhill driving i did notice oil pressure to be at mid-way from 1/4. Assuming it will be normal?

Higher rpm will increase oil pressure.

This is exactly how my '06 behaves. I am also running M1 5w-30 but using a Toyota filter. I have never seen my gauge go above 1/2 or below 1/4.

The manual shows that "normal" idle range is 0-3/4 and "normal" driving range is 1/4-1 on the gauge. There are a few threads on here talking about the low pressure on the gauge concern. I was originally concerned but now feel that this is something with the '06-'07 trucks. I'm interested in some data to back my speculation up. Maybe a VVTi thing or sender thing, I don't know. It also could be an intentionally deadened gauge.

The FSM states to put a pressure gauge on at the pressure sender location to test. If you're concerned, then this is the route to go.

The 2UZ is has an excellent reputation for longevity and durability with no reports of damage relating to low oil pressure.
