I have a oil leak that is at the bottom front of the engine, it is right where the oil pan meets the crank. ill try to get a picture up tomorrow.
It leaked out 1 qt in 100miles

any ideas on exactly what it may be?

I cant tell if it is the front of the oil pan leaking or the crank seal.

Check the oil pan gasket. I tightened those bolts and it stopped leaking as much. I still need to replace it but that's where I am now. The bolts were barely hand tight. Don't over torque them or between the bolts the gasket arcs up. Ask me how I know. :)

already tried to tighten things down. all were good. leak continues.

when the dips stick shows low, it does not leak; after adding a qt it show dead on between low and full and leaks.

Damn, 1qt in 100 miles is a lot! Possibly timing gear cover??

That detail leads me to lean towards a crank seal, as it's the highest point in the bottom end. Can you pressure wash it, and see if that helps discriminate. Heck, why not try some of that flourescent dye, I've never tried it myself.

Has anything been done to the timing gear cover lately? If so, it could be the infamous problem of having the timing gear oiler threaded in too much so that it sticks out the back of the plate.

Ah, I've not heard that little tidbit, HW. I have a small leak up front, seems higher than the pan, and was gonna start poking around down there after a few honey-do's got marked off my list.

If I end up pulling the cover and diving in, how far is too far on the oiler?

had some timing work done last summer, but leak is a recent thing. i think once i get a picture up it will help everyone out.

If it is the crank how much work is it to change that out?
