I just completed a carb overhaul an my 1974 with F1.5 engine. Also completed an oil change and replaced the thermostat. Drove the vehicle 10 miles to a buddies house and parked it for around an hour. Drove back home and decided to lift the hood. Oily residue on inside of the hood and coolant coming from overflow hose. The coolant was black and had oil in it. What could cause this i searched the FAQ and saw one example but the thread ended with no resolution. Flushed the radiator this evening and every time after running at idle the coolant was still black. the oil level is fine and no sign of coolant in the oil. Prior to this the vehicle had sat for a couple of years this was her "maiden ride".

Head gasket likely leaking between oil port and coolant port. All other possibilities are much worse like a cracked head or block. Head gasket most likely cause though.

Leaking head gasket would be my guess

As said it sounds like a head gasket oa crack in the head or block. when you have it running look and see if you have air bubbles in the water that is a definate sign that you have serious problembs. then you can check the pressure on each cylinder that will narrow it down to a cylinder.
