Oil filter change for ’97 model years?

I was just cross referencing some Oil Filter information and thought it was odd that Toyota downsized the oil filter for the last model year of the 80 series cruisers? Is this correct, or just an error in K&N’s database? And if so, anyone know why they changed to a smaller diameter, smaller volume can?? Just curious. Geez, I haven’t even found the right 80 to buy yet, and I’m looking up oil filter information, this can’t be good…

Here's the Specs from K&N...

there are two OEM sizes of filters, either size can be used on any year, no changes were made to the engine that effect the filter.

maybe the small filter was introduced in 97? I dont know but the effects of the two have been discussed at length here.

The "small" filter came on the scene in April 1996 production

Thanks for the added information guys. I had initially made the assumption that the filters would be interchangeable, until I noticed in the specs that the can diameters were significantly different. I would have thought that using the larger diameter filter can would lead to a problem with the outer seal not having a surface to seal against, that’s were the confusion set in. I did search, and came up with pages of posts I read through, found lots of good stuff, but couldn’t find anything that specifically answered my question.

Gaskets are of the same diameter. Only the can is different.

On the "large" filter the o-ring is a bit smaller than the OD, it is set in about a quarter inch, so the two filters have the same O-ring pattern (or close enough)

Next time you are at a parts store take a look at a Fram PH8A, that is the equivalent to the large filter, but never buy the orange can, it is evil.

Edit: fast fingers Tarbe,
